at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor of Inclusive Leadership.
The Masters of the Environment
(MENV) Graduate Program, within the University of Colorado Boulder's Department of Environmental Studies, seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor and Faculty Lead for MENV's core leadership curriculum and the new Outdoor Recreation Economy (ORE) program's Inclusive Leadership Certificate. The anticipated start date is August 2022.
The Masters of the Environment graduate professional program seeks to fill a 9-month, non-tenure track teaching faculty position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor with a focus on inclusive leadership. MENV embraces Dr. Stefanie Johnson's (2020) definition of inclusive leadership, which emphasizes leadership that recognizes and celebrates unique and dissenting perspectives while creating a collaborative and open-minded environment where everyone feels that they truly belong. Inclusive leaders treat all people respectfully and fairly, and create a sense of value, confidence, and inspiration for those around them.
We seek a faculty member who will take the lead on teaching and integration of inclusive leadership within the residential MENV program and the online Outdoor Recreation Economy (ORE) program. The successful candidate will bring vision, leadership expertise, and an entrepreneurial spirit to contribute broadly to the growing MENV and ORE programs.
The successful candidate will possess professional experience in topics centered on the environment and sustainability, which may include experience in higher education or other societal sectors related to resilience and social change. The candidate will have experience developing leadership curriculum or training for professionals or higher education audiences, with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ).

The Outdoor Recreation Economy program sits within MENV and creates impact for the broader outdoor industry through applied research and project delivery with organizational partners, and the cultivation of innovators and inclusive leaders. ORE is committed to supporting the entire outdoor recreation economy through innovative approaches to economic development, the management of resilient public lands and waterways, the creation of inclusive spaces, and the promotion of sustainable business practices.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
This position is a nine-month, academic-year Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor appointment and may include an additional summer responsibilities. We seek a candidate to develop and deliver curriculum in the MENV and ORE programs, make substantive contributions in thought leadership, as well as participate in innovative and impactful professional activities. The position includes teaching, advising, administrative duties, and research/professional work. The position includes a mix of the following primary responsibilities:
Faculty Lead
Serve as faculty lead for MENV's core leadership course and the new certificate in Inclusive Leadership for the ORE program. Oversee the curriculum, engage faculty in curricular development, and advise students.
Engage with Industry
Develop and facilitate relationships with external organizations and serve as a resource for the sustainability and outdoor industries.
Teaching
Develop and teach in-person, as well as online professional graduate courses.
Capstone Advisor
Advise MENV students in experiential learning projects.
Support Student Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation
Work with the MENV and ORE program faculty to support student recruitment, retention, and placement into impactful careers.
Research and Creative Work
Depending on the candidate background, this position may also include engaging in research or creative work related to professional practice. This involves a) demonstrating a deep understanding of professional practices in inclusive leadership, sustainability, and the outdoor recreation economy b) developing, facilitating relationships with, and serving as a resource to external organizations and communities; c) demonstrating impact and innovation within the professional practice; and d) engaging in research and thought leadership in inclusive leadership, sustainability, and the outdoor recreation economy.

This role will also be expected to contribute toward program efforts to address dimensions of underserved communities, justice and equity, and race, gender, and/or class influence as it relates to sustainability and the outdoor recreation industry.
Personal qualities should include a spirit of collaboration, a passion for learning and the requisite humility that is required when working in an emergent field with creative, professional students. Strong interpersonal skills and self-directedness are a must for this team-based program.

What We Can Offer
We can offer a competitive academic year salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications, in the range of $65,000. - $79,000 for the Teaching Assistant Professor position, or $80,000 - $90,000 for the Teaching Associate Professor position. This position is an initial three year appointment that can be renewable.

What We Require
For the Teaching Assistant Professor rank: Graduate degree (e.g., PhD, MS, MA, MBA, JD) or close equivalent in relevant field.
Teaching experience at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level, which may include experience as a graduate teaching assistant or equivalent (e.g., teaching or training as an environmental professional); OR professional experience in a relevant field.
Demonstrated experience and passion for teaching, shown through course/curriculum development, integration of service learning, teaching innovation, or development of effective pedagogical methods.
Record of delivering professional development (e.g., delivering workshops, presenting at or organizing conferences).
Some demonstration of thought leadership (research, publications, presentations) that contributes to a professional reputation in this space.
Some demonstration outreach, community engagement, or service in the community or in other areas that utilizes expertise.
For the Teaching Associate Professor rank: Graduate degree (e.g., PhD, MS, MA, MBA, JD) or close equivalent in relevant field.
Minimum 7 years experience as assistant professor or equivalent; or the equivalent number of years in relevant professional practice.
Demonstrated experience and passion for teaching, shown through course/curriculum development, integration of service learning, teaching innovation, or development of effective pedagogical methods.
Strong record of delivering professional development (e.g., delivering workshops, presenting at or organizing conferences).
Demonstrated thought leadership (research, publications, presentations) that contributes to a strong professional reputation.
Demonstrated and sustained outreach, community engagement, or service in the community or in other areas that utilizes expertise.

Professional education, higher education learning, extension school, facilitation, and/or technical assistance.
Professional leadership experience at the director level or above.
Strong connections with industry, nonprofits, and/or government to facilitate student opportunities.
Experience dealing with complex issues, multiple business functions and/or stakeholders with varying interests.
Evidence of engaging diverse communities and creating strong partnerships.
Experience in creating innovative learning experiences.
A passion for and commitment to student mentoring.
