Thomas Nelson, which is becoming Virginia Peninsula Community College, welcomes applications for a Vice President for Academic Affairs. Founded in 1967, we serve the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg as well as counties of James City and York. As of Academic year 2020-2021, our college was the 6th largest in Virginia’s Community College System – enrolling 9,652 credit seeking students and 1,100 non-credit seeking students. The incoming Vice President will have unique opportunities to lead at an institution that celebrates strong relationships with our PreK-12 public and private schools, four-year colleges and universities, local and multi-national business partners, workforce councils, chambers of commerce, social service and community-based organizations, and many local military partners. The Vice President articulates and emphasizes the College mission, goals, values, and priorities throughout the college community, and works collaboratively with the President’s Cabinet to achieve institutional objectives. These objectives include fostering a climate of inclusivity, academic excellence, student development, student success.
The college is nestled in the backyard of the NASA Langley Research Center, Jefferson Lab, multiple military bases, the largest nuclear ship and submarine building company in the United States, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Colonial Williamsburg, and several major medical and healthcare institutions. Our community is home to the Commonwealth’s largest infrastructure project, the first U.S. offshore wind energy development in federal waters, a diverse array of homeland defense and security organizations, excellent public-school systems, renown colleges and universities, theme parks, museums, research centers, entrepreneurial incubation labs, fine dining, arts, entertainment, and leisure.
The Position:
This is a twelve-month administrative-faculty position, reporting to the President. This is an executive leadership position where the Vice President serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet and as the chief academic officer for the College. The Vice President for Academic Affairs is vested with the authority for providing dynamic academic and administrative leadership, strategic planning, and implementing and evaluating academic support services. The Vice President is adept at fostering change and collaboration, is responsible for advancing the strategic direction and mission of the college, and guides faculty and Deans in the review and development of thriving academic programs that anticipate and reflect trends in higher education.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs will be a visionary and entrepreneurial leader who will continue advancing academic initiatives to ensure relevant, high-quality academic programs, and quality high-impact practices that positively contribute to student experience and retention. The Vice President leads and executes initiatives in alignment with the College’s Strategic Plan which articulates our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across all strategic initiatives and improvement efforts. The infusion of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout these strategic goals will advance the College’s mission and further realize our vision for broader and more equitable service to our students and community. The Vice President will embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms as a college-wide value, including an understanding of implicit bias, anti-racism, and the fostering of equity-minded learning environments.
The Vice President will manifest the principles of shared governance and collaborate with faculty to advance the College’s relevance and brand. The Vice President must have experience with strategic planning, budgeting, instructional resource allocation, assessment, and accreditation. The Vice President will develop and empower Deans and Directors to manage daily decision making and departmental operations. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to and appreciation of diversity as well as civic and community involvement are required.
The Vice President must gain proficiency with the college’s academic programs, system programs, and policies and procedures of the Virginia Community College System, State Council for Higher Education for Virginia, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
As a member of the President’s Cabinet
Advance College’s relevance and brand with regional partners.
Represent the President and the College internally and externally – serving on community boards, System Office Committees, and other advisory boards as needed.
Collaborate with Cabinet members to support implementation and completion of initiatives which support the College’s strategic plan.
Collaborate with the Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Success to advance data-informed strategies that improve student access, progression, completion, and elimination of equity gaps.
College Governance
Oversee College governance committees.
Liaison with the faculty senate and meet regularly with the faculty senate executive committee.
Areas of responsibility include:
Curriculum development and program health review.
Collaborate with academic departments and student affairs in planning and implementing a class schedule that meets the needs of students.
Academic policy review and production of the College Catalog.
Management of transfer and articulation agreements.
Oversight of dual enrollment course curriculum approvals, as well as the faculty credentialing and professional development.
Grant development and grant management.
Virginia Community College System’s academic initiatives.
Faculty recruitment, hiring, evaluation, promotion, professional development, and succession planning.
Compliance reporting for Virginia Community College System, State Council for Higher Education for Virginia, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Creation of the Academic Calendar.
Updates to the faculty handbook and curriculum development guide.
Incorporating technology into instructional processes.
Other
Expected to be regularly, physically present at both campus locations and off-site locations.
Performs other duties as assigned by the President.

Degree Requirements
Earned doctorate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of five years of higher education administrative experience in a leadership role which included curriculum development, strategic planning and implementation, outcomes assessment, and academic program design and review.
Experience effectively leading and fostering diversity, equity, inclusiveness, and an anti-racist environment for students and employees.
Proven track record of advocacy for the LGBTQIA community, persons with disabilities, and other minoritized groups of disproportionately impacted students and employees.
Demonstrated commitment to shared governance, and a demonstrated ability to build a culture of cohesion, dialogue, civility, and academic excellence.
Demonstrated experience in budget development and administration, fiscal management and resource allocation, personnel supervision, evaluation, and professional development.
Experience, confidence, leadership, and diplomacy to interact with all levels of college operations, partners in business, industry, education, and local and state government leaders as appropriate.
Strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as broad familiarity with the current issues facing community colleges.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience collaborating with workforce training and continuing education colleagues to design short-term programming.
Experience in the integration of information technology for academic programs.
