The
Mansfield Center’s Defense Critical Language and Culture Program (DCLCP)
is one of the top language training centers in the nation. DCLCP provides intensive language and culture training for members of the U.S. military and other government agencies.
This is a temporary position to teach an initial acquisition Norwegian course conducted virtually with up to five students from August 8, 2022 to January 27, 2023.
The
Norwegian Instructor of Language and Culture
will develop curriculum and instruct U.S. government personnel in intensive initial acquisition Norwegian language and culture delivered virtually. The language instructor is responsible for approximately 5 hours of teaching per day and approximately 3 hours per day of lesson preparation, classroom management, administration, and supplementary curriculum development. The instructor must be able to create and follow syllabi without oversight. The desired learning outcome is for students is to meet Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scores of 2/2/1 taken on the OPI and DLPT tests at the end of the course.
Must be fluent in Norwegian language and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English. The instructor may be required to take an Oral Proficiency Interview and score superior in Norwegian and advanced in English prior to selection.
Must continuously assess student progress with weekly assessment tools; develop innovative teaching interventions to help students overcome any learning challenges; and tutor or provide extra learning materials as needed for student success.
In addition to language, the instructor will teach Norwegian cultural and regional studies information in the target language or in English. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the geography, history, literature, natural resources, economy, government, ethnicities, etc. of Norway and Scandinavia.
The Norwegian Language and Culture Instructor must have a high level of knowledge in current teaching methodologies and be comfortable with teaching through technology using Video-Teleconferencing (VTCs). Support instructors must be able to work productively in a group (team teaching, active coordination, extensive collaboration) and in an independent mode. The instructor must be able to create and follow syllabi without oversight.
Instructor must have a valid work authorization for the U.S.
Required Qualifications
Applicant should have a Master’s Degree, preferably in Norwegian (language and/or literature) or linguistics (applied linguistics is preferred); preference is a Ph.D.
Must have experience in instructing Norwegian language and culture.
Must have experience in curriculum development for Norwegian language materials.
Must have knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices in the classroom and experience utilizing advanced classroom technologies.
Must be able to work productively within a team and independently.
Applicant may be required to take the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) before selection; must score superior in Norwegian and advanced in English.
Must have a stable internet connection over which to conduct classes.
Must have a valid work authorization for the U.S.
Must be able to pass a Criminal Background Investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in intensive language instruction, particularly in a military or government setting.
Preferred education is an M.A. or Ph.D.
