The Mansfield Center Department of Critical Language and Culture Program (DCLCP)
invites applications for an
Assistant Manager/Language & Culture
. The instructor will assist in the development of curriculum and instruct military and United States government agency personnel in intensive language, culture and regional studies courses delivered over video-teleconferencing (VTC) and in-resident venues.
This position is responsible for duties at the Defense Critical Language and Culture Program with a high level of autonomy in managing a diverse set of tasks for a variety of faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants and a member of the DCLCP primary support team, all with minimum day-to-day supervision. The Assistant Manager/Language & Culture serves as a customer/military partner liaison for several DCLCP programmatic issues that may include scheduling, customer responsive course content, and alternative venues for course presentations.
The position also requires that the Assistant Manager be able to teach in at least one critical language (Russian, Arabic, Persian-Farsi, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, French, Spanish, Thai, Tagalog). Applicants are required to take the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) before final selection and must score superior in another critical language.
When teaching, the duration of each course ranges from one day to one year. While classes are in session 5-6 hours of teaching per day is common per instructor, while 2-3 hours per day are used for lesson preparation, classroom management, administration and supplementary curriculum development. This position is responsible for 5-6 hours of in class teaching daily and designing a course curriculum and syllabus.
This position may be located at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Missoula, Montana, or other location dependent upon mission requirements or at the request of our customers or as determined by the Director of the DCLCP.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
Identify language and culture training requirements of most significance to current and potential DoD and USG customers. This may include specific languages, fluency requirements, mission set compatibility and requirement level of the cultural and regional studies components.
Teach the language, with cultural and regional studies courses in the target language or in English. Topics may include but are not limited to geography, history, literature, natural resources, economy, government, ethnicities, etc.
Assist the leadership team with various projects to support and expand DCLCP services.
Identify and recruit language and culture instructors consistent with DoD requirements.
Place particular emphasis on both academic qualifications and ability to work compatibly with potential DoD and USG customers.
Direct DCLCP focus on courses and courseware material that are consistent with DoD and USG customer organizations and meets the academic standards of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. (UM) and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
Maintain a calendar to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposal deadlines, and reports.
Assess U.S. National Security Policy and National Military Strategy in a manner that is predictive of DoD and USG needs for language and cultural studies.
Review and make recommendations on all faculty hiring.
Ensure consistency in development of DCLCP’s foreign language syllabi and other course materials consistent with DoD and USG needs.
Act as the primary liaison between the DCLCP and federal agencies regarding the DCLCP capabilities and user requirements in terms of venue selection alternatives of “in residence”, VTC, computer based online, Mobile Training Teams and iso-immersion instruction.
Orchestrate and design contracting vehicles and other financial arrangements consistent with requirements imposed on Language Training Centers (LTC) to enable program growth and sustainment consistent with customer requirements.
Lead on-site administrative collaboration efforts to integrate user organization requirements with procedures and processes of UM.
Ensure consistency and customer responsiveness in development of DCLCP’s foreign language syllabi and other course materials consistent with appropriate pedagogical and linguistic standards.
Ensure the DCLCP/LTC courses offered meet or exceed the academic standards.
Determine critical language and cultural training needs of the DoD organizations and ensure that DCLCP offerings are responsive and flexible in terms of course design and venue alternatives.
Provide direction, reviews, and make recommendations on site hiring qualified language instructors and other faculty and staff hires.
Due to multiple training sites, some travel may be required.

Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

Salary for this position is $79,560 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Post-Training Position Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Upon completion of training, the incumbent will have a working knowledge of several duties and skills that include but are not limited to:
Management of the administrative and logistics operations of the UMDCLCP team at Fort Bragg, NC.
Conducting weekly meetings with team members; ensure effective communication and collaboration within the section.
Ability to develop course syllabus and curriculum prior to class start dates.
Analyze problems, identify solutions, and take actions in regards to problems that arise.
Ensuring maintenance of accurate records of DCLCP performance; maintain records and data according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
Collaboration with other LTC programs and other language providers for the purpose of implementing and maintaining academic programs.
Required Skills and Experience
Experience working with U.S. military Specials Operations Forces (SOF), and particularly their language and culture training administration.
Experience instructing in one critical language and culture.
Experience in curriculum development for language and culture materials.
Ability to develop curricula and syllabi based on the needs of the program and as required by the Department of Defense (DoD).
Ability to score advanced in English as tested against the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI),
Knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices in the classroom and experience utilizing advanced classroom technologies.
Ability to work productively within a team and establish strong professional working relationships with subordinates, as well as work independently.
Demonstrate professionalism, initiative, judgment, independent thought and action, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrate considerable and varied communication skills required to represent the program in written and verbal exchanges.
Knowledge and ability to review lessons, check for transcription, pronunciation, proper English usage and expression and provide quality control.
Ensure lessons developed meet both DoD and UM requirements as well as managing the curriculum development process for foreign language instructors.
Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures; business English, spelling, grammar, composition, proofreading and ability to edit materials.
Demonstrate skill in the operation of computers and related word processing, spreadsheet and database software, as well as the ability to update web content (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Access) with the ability to learn new software on finance and budgetary systems.
Ability to use computer and monitor for a prolonged period of time.
