Job Summary
Under general direction of the supervisor, this position is responsible for the performance of organic and inorganic analyses for the determination of industrial and naturally occurring toxins in animal tissues, biological specimens and source material. The position is responsible for maintaining quality control and participating in the update and development of analytical procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Be able to perform repetitive motions; pipetting.
Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program.
This position is subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies, as well as medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials.
May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is subject to UCD's vaccination program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2, is/might subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
This position is not eligible for remote work, due to the nature of the essential responsibilities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period).
Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines.
Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation.
Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Audits Periods, etc.)
Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.

This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.

Must have ability to complete Select Agent background clearance procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of sample preparation techniques used for the analysis of organic and/or inorganic chemicals in biological and/or food samples such as solid phase and liquid-liquid sample extraction, acid digestion, sample spiking and matrix matching.
Skill in the operation of manual and computer-controlled analytical equipment including Gas Chromatographs, Liquid Chromatographs, Mass Spectrometers, ICPs, Centrifuges, etc.
Skill to perform mathematical calculations necessary to prepare chemical solutions at specific concentrations and to calculate concentrations of detected residues in samples.
Skills to prepare analytical reagents, solutions, controls and standards.
Knowledge of QA/QC concepts and ability to apply this knowledge to continuously produce high quality data.
Data entry skills to quickly/accurately enter test results into a computerized database.
Preferred:
Experience working in a laboratory focused on performing testing for individual clients on a time restricted basis.
Experience working with animal tissues.
Experience operating mass spectrometers.
