Profile

The Spanish (Castilian) Language Instructor serves as a foreign language instructor and academic specialist on a foreign language teaching team and as such serves as a model teacher, a trainer for other team members in the latest techniques and developments in the field of foreign language training, and as an architect of instructional material development and modification. They will develop curriculum and instruct U.S. military and government personnel in intensive language and culture courses delivered in person and over video-teleconferencing (VTC).
Due to instruction being conducted at multiple training sites, some travel may be required for instructors.
The position is located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina or other location dependent upon mission requirements or at the request of our customers or as determined by the DCLCP Director. Due to instruction conducted at multiple training sites, some travel may be required for instructors.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s Degree in Spanish (Castilian) language, literature, linguistics, history, anthropology or a related field.
Experience in instructing Spanish (Castilian) language and culture.
Experience in curriculum development for Spanish (Castilian) language materials.
Adroit observational skills and ability to offer fresh, creative solutions in difficult situations.
Ability to score advanced in English as tested against the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), is required to take the OPI before selection and must score superior in Spanish.
Must be able to pass a Criminal Background Investigation.
Knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices in the classroom and experience utilizing advanced classroom technologies.
Fluent in Spanish (Castilian) language and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English.
Position Details
Based on the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications, the position may be hired at CLS, Support or Lead Instructor.
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment, and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package.
Required Qualifications and Responsibilities for each Level
Spanish (Castilian) Cadre Language Instructor
Be able to teach and develop curriculum in the culture, national security issues, geography, history, literature, natural resources, economy, government, ethnicities, etc. of the target regions.
High level of knowledge in current teaching methodologies and be comfortable with teaching through technology using Video-Teleconferencing (VTCs), Smartboards, and iPads.
Teaching (70%). Establishes learning objectives and course content; advises language department chairperson; instructs students involving a broad and diverse range of content domains and integrated language skills; conducts informal pilot studies to improve instruction; applies best practices in teaching approaches and techniques; tailors instruction.
Curriculum Development (15%). Develops and maintains course syllabi and curricula; develops new materials; schedules instruction; distributes course materials to students in a timely manner; incorporates culture and regional studies coursework into curricula; maintains expertise in foreign language acquisition principles; stays abreast of current research and theories of the discipline of foreign language education and of new language materials available from outside sources.
Student and Program Evaluation (15%). Evaluates the effectiveness of the curricula to ensure that customer, DCLCP and student expectations are met; develops evaluation standards; assesses student language capabilities; reviews weekly lesson plans and curriculum; reviews student’s weekly grades and performance; emplaces pedagogic interventions for students who are not meeting expectations; completes student progress reports and bi-weekly counseling.
Ensures effective communication and collaboration within the department.
Completes assigned tasks from the supported customer and from the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) in a timely manner.
Conducts weekly meetings with language faculty and attends DCLCP weekly and other meetings as needed.
Collaborates with the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) on requirements for course accreditation submission.
Spanish (Castilian) Language Support Instructor
Supports Spanish language instructional team with curriculum development, scheduling, student administration and academic progress, student advising and tutoring, classroom observations, grammar clinics, testing/quizzes/placement/other assessments, after-course evaluation and improvement,
Conducts initial learner orientation and strategy review sessions with each class, communicates course goals, graduation proficiency requirements, and other program requirements as needed.
Educates instructors on using on-line class technologies, and in class technology (Starboard).
Monitors students’ grades and performance systematically; intervenes when necessary.
Maintains official records of counseling sessions, recommendations, individualized lesson plans, and action plans made to students.
Substitutes in classes and supports last-minute changes/decisions when necessary.
Completes assigned tasks from the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) in a timely manner.
Attends weekly meetings with language faculty and attends DCLCP weekly and other meetings as needed.
Collaborates with the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) on course accreditation submission requirements.
Lead Spanish (Castilian) Language and Culture Instructor
Ph.D. in Spanish (Castilian) language and/or literature, linguistics (applied linguistics is preferred), history, anthropology, or any related field.
Develop curriculum and instruct U.S. military and government personnel in intensive language and culture courses delivered in person and over video-teleconferencing (VTC). The duration of each course ranges from one day to one year. While classes are in session, the lead language instructor is responsible for 5-6 hours of teaching per day and 2-3 hours per day for lesson preparation, classroom management, administration, and supplementary curriculum development. When courses are not in session, the lead language instructor develops course materials for publishing and for in-class use. The Lead Language Instructor is responsible for design of course curricula and syllabi and supervises the instruction of other faculty within the language department.
Dedicate themselves to the improvement of the department and be able to provide constructive criticism and helpful solutions to other instructors. The Lead Instructor will possess adroit observational skills and be capable of offering fresh, creative solutions in difficult situations.
Be fluent in the Spanish (Castilian) language and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English. The instructor is required to take an Oral Proficiency Interview and score superior in Spanish (Castilian) and advanced in English prior to selection.
Teach not only the language, but also teach cultural and regional studies courses in the target language or in English. Topics may include but are not limited to geography, history, literature, natural resources, economy, government, ethnicities, etc. of Spanish-speaking regions.
Have a high level of knowledge in current teaching methodologies and be comfortable with teaching through technology using Video-Teleconferencing (VTC), Smartboards, and iPads. The Lead Instructor must also be able to lead a productive language team, work collaboratively with the group (team teaching, active coordination, extensive collaboration), and work effectively in an independent mode. The Lead Instructor must be able to supervise others and themselves create and follow syllabi without oversight.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph. D. in Spanish (Castilian) language and/or literature, applied linguistics, history, anthropology, or any related field.
Experience in intensive language instruction, particularly in a military or government setting.
Experience managing organizations and supervising instructors or others.
