Project Description
A PhD position is available from 1
st
October 2022 in collaboration with Syngenta to model the absorption of agrochemical formulations into skin. The project will be supervised by Dr Rebecca Notman in the Department of Chemistry at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***..
To meet the global demand for food, crops of the future need to be sustainable, high quality and safe. Crop protection products help to achieve this by protecting crops from insects, weeds and disease; however exposure to the product must be safe to the farmer, community and environment. One route of exposure is through contact with skin. Accordingly, dermal absorption is assessed during the testing of new products and is strictly regulated. While designing formulations to minimise skin absorption would enable more crop protection products to reach the market, the fundamental mechanisms of dermal absorption of agrochemical active ingredients (AIs) and the role of formulation are not understood. This project will use molecular dynamics computer simulations to address this challenge, with benefits to the crop protection and farming industries, food production and consumers.
Dermal absorption is typically studied by
in-vitro
permeation experiments that measure total absorbed amounts and the rate of permeation through a representative membrane. This data does not reveal the underlying permeation pathways or the role of specific interactions with the components of skin. Instead, this project will involve carrying out advanced molecular dynamics simulations of skin-lipid membranes in the presence of agrochemical AIs and other formulation ingredients, which will enable us to gain a fundamental understanding of the physico-chemical processes and interactions that govern absorption and permeation of agrochemical formulations into skin.
The student will be based at Warwick but will benefit from opportunities to undertake placements at Syngenta’s Jealott’s Hill site to gain expertise in the laboratory and data analysis techniques used for membrane permeation studies.

****Requirements
Applicants should have (or be about to receive) an honours degree (at least 2:1 or equivalent) in chemistry, physics or another relevant discipline. Prior experience of computational chemistry or molecular simulation is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided.
