The Director of the Legal Education Opportunity (LEO) program at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. School of Law serves the University’s diverse and first-generation law students, known as LEO fellows, providing the students with advisory and tactical support to enable them to focus on their rigorous academic and professional aspirations.
Reporting to the Associate Dean, the LEO Director oversees and manages the administration of the LEO summer institute, facilitates programming and community building for LEO Fellows throughout the year, serves as link between professionals providing academic success and support for LEO Fellows, fosters LEO alumni relationships, and oversees the marketing of LEO programming efforts. The Director will also create and deliver professional development sessions for the LEO fellows.
The Director of the LEO program will also teach an Introduction to Lawyering course. The Introduction to Lawyering course is a full-year six credit course. The course covers legal writing, legal research, client interviewing, client counseling, negotiation, oral argument, and professionalism. The course is taught by legal practice professors in a coordinated and collaborative manner.
Duties and Responsibilities:
PROGRAM DESIGN AND ADMINISTRATION
o Develop and oversee the summer LEO institute.
o Deliver in-person and virtual learning events throughout the academic year, including special events, workshops, and other learning and development offerings.
o Plan, facilitate and serve as a key liaison for LEO student activities including LEO alumni events, ongoing semester programming, student networking events, speaker events, and other initiatives for LEO students.
o Track and evaluate student academic progress and engagement along with student feedback.
o Act as the advisor to LEO student groups.
o Support LEO student professional development and leadership.
o Research the current learning trends in order to assist students in academic performance.
o Meet with struggling students one-on-one to provide academic coaching on improving executive functions and time management.
o Identify ways to continuously improve the programs and outcomes.
o Develop and manage the overall leadership and skill-building programs by identifying the learning needs and opportunities of LEO students.
o Host open virtual and in person office hours for all student inquiries including addressing and advising student inquiries related to academic and professional success and escalating urgent issues to the Academic Dean.
o Identify and assign alumni, peers, and faculty mentors to new LEO Fellows; facilitate connection between them and provide periodic communication to faculty mentors to encourage productive mentoring relationships.
o Collect data and maintain data on student performance from matriculation through graduation and job placement.
o Work with Alumni & Development Office to maintain and add to the list of LEO alumni; to engage in fundraising efforts; to invite alumni to participate in the summer institute and in programming during the year, and to ultimately develop and maintain a LEO Directory of alumni that is accessible by LEO Fellows
o Engage alumni for interest in social, programming, and employment opportunities for LEO Fellows
o Work with the Office of Career Services to discuss the Summer Employment Program with potential employers and facilitate the process of Fellows applying for consideration.
o Work with the Director of Bar Success to plan a bar information session for the LEO students. Make referrals to the Bar Success Director and communicate with this person during the final semester and during bar prep to consistently support the LEO fellows in their bar exam preparation.
o Work with administration and the LEO Board to develop an annual budget for the LEO program including for the Summer Institute
o Facilitate academic support and academic advising for LEO Fellows, collaborating with professionals who provide this support to students.
o Collaborate with the faculty and administration members of the LEO Advisory Board to further the mission of the LEO program.
LEO SUMMER INSTITUTE DELIVERY
o Manage and set up technologies and course/program administration for the LEO summer Institute and track student progress, host videos/tutorials, and communication and evaluation of programs.
o Collaborate with Summer Institute faculty to obtain and manage resources (books, materials, and virtual materials to support students during the course work and interactivity).
o Welcome and orient incoming LEO Fellows to the program prior to the summer institute; Ensure delivery of course materials and program schedule plus notice of other important information relevant to the start of the summer institute.
o Oversee on-site in-person activities including set up and shut down of the summer institute.
o Arrange for guest speakers and faculty lecturers.
o Evaluate and assess the session quality and make continuous improvements to the summer institute and other programs.
o Manage LEO summer institute programming, staff, and student (RA) employees.
RELATED DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
o Work with catering during summer institute to provide food during program.
o Work with Financial Aid and the bookstore to facilitate the book purchase and processing of book stipends for 1L students.
o Serve on the LEO Advisory Board and provide status reports at the monthly meetings during the semester.
o Perform other related duties as assigned.
As an Assistant Professor of Legal Practice, the faculty member will be responsible for the following:
• Teaching Introduction to Lawyering classes, either through in-person or remote class sessions as determined by law school administration.
• Teaching twice a week during weeks when classes are scheduled for the day program.
• Responsible for assisting with the development of a writing assignment and all supporting documents to be used during the academic school year.
• Meeting with students in individual and joint conferences to discuss writing assignments and interactive skills exercises.
• Providing students with detailed written feedback on writing assignments and interactive skills exercises.
• Attending Introduction to Lawyering faculty meetings to prepare for upcoming classes and activities.
• Teaching several sessions at the Introduction to Lawyering Day at law school orientation.
• Meeting with students outside of class time and conferences as needed to discuss assignments and other law school topics.
• Working with the Director of Lawyering and other Lawyering faculty to create and revise the class exercises.
• Other assignments consistent with the needs of the program.
