The
Mansfield Library
invites applications for a
Digital Collections and Metadata Specialist
to oversee digital projects that originate from the Mansfield Library’s Archives and Special Collections (ASC). Specifically, the individual in this position oversees the digitization of ASC materials in a variety of formats; creates item and collection metadata using appropriate schema; and ensures digital materials are optimally accessible, including to those using assistive technologies. To accomplish their responsibilities, the Digital Collections and Metadata Specialist will collaborate with and work across multiple library functional units including Archives and Special Collections, Digital Initiatives, Bibliographic Management, and Systems.
The individual in this position must be detail oriented, able to prioritize and multitask, work productively individually and as a team member, and communicate effectively in person and in writing.
The individual in this position will likely spend at least 80% of their time working at a computer. Physical lifting and pushing loaded book carts are typical activities for this position, as is occasional work with dusty materials.
Primary responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
Creating and maintaining metadata for ASC digital items and digital collections using appropriate metadata standards and best practices.
Managing projects and students in the areas of scanning / digitization of collection material including imaging/post-capture processing, quality control, digital conversion/formatting, optical character recognition, and project file preparation for long-term preservation and for online access.
Managing and maintaining digitized and born-digital content from ASC hosted in ScholarWorks
(the Mansfield Library's institutional repository service), the Montana Memory Project
, and other platforms.
Assisting with the implementation and use of metadata and controlled vocabulary within ASC resources, including Archives Space and **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Web Archives.
Assisting with creating and editing bibliographic records (OCLC, Alma, etc.) for ASC resources such as oral histories, archival collections, maps, books and pamphlets.
Supporting the Mansfield Library and University of Montana priorities of promoting diversity, equality, inclusion and anti-racism through collections, services and interactions.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience with metadata creation for library and/or archival materials such as by using AACR2, RDA, MODS or Dublin Core.
Experience working with controlled vocabularies and/or thesauri, such as LCSH, TGM, AAT, etc.
Familiarity with metadata harvesting and crosswalks.
Familiarity with digital file formats.
Knowledge of and ability to apply internationally accepted best practices and standards for digitization.
Demonstrated comfort with technology, and ability to learn and use new technologies (hardware and software) independently.
Broad knowledge of Montana history and/or the history of the American West.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Demonstrated attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with advanced Excel functions.
Basic knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage projects effectively, including experience with prioritization and goal-setting.
Familiarity with relational databases.
Knowledge of and ability to apply accessibility guidelines and best practices (ie. WCAG guidelines).
Basic understanding of archival and/or special collections materials and their uses.
Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills.
Demonstrated research and writing skills.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Basic knowledge of Photoshop.
Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field, or specialized trainings or certifications in a related field.
Experience working in an academic library, particularly with digital projects and/or descriptive metadata and authority control.
Experience cataloging library and/or archival materials using MARC.
Experience creating authority headings.
Experience with metadata harvesting and crosswalks.
Experience implementing accessibility guidelines and best practices (ie. WCAG guidelines).
Experience using digitization equipment, such as flatbed and overhead scanners or camera-based image capture systems.
Knowledge of DACS (Describing Archives: Content Standard).
Experience working with archival and/or special collections material.
Experience supervising employees.
Experience with Photoshop.
Experience with ABBYY FineReader or other optical character recognition software.
Basic knowledge of or experience with Open Refine.
