The Population Health Initiative
is a presidential priority that seeks to advance the health and well-being of people around the world by leveraging capabilities and opportunities at the UW and beyond. This position is integral to the initiative's ability to execute a key interdisciplinary research project that seeks to address critical challenges in population health.


The Population Health Initiative has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary
Research Scientist
to join our team.
This position is full-time and anticipated to be 11 months in duration. The Research Scientist will be a core member of a mixed-methods study to compare resilient immunization programs in the United States and Canada to reduce racial gaps in vaccination levels. Key activities include measuring and reviewing changes in vaccine equity in Canada over time, identifying which public health interventions or public policies have most effectively improved immunization equity, and comparing findings with a recently completed study of U.S. immunization programs. The Population Health Initiative engages and galvanizes stakeholders from across the UW, the region, and the globe toward achieving the vision of creating a world where all people can live healthier and more fulfilling lives. This position acts as a critical resource to translate that vision into reality by supporting the completion of a key, initiative-led research project.


The Research Scientist will play a key role in the completion of a research project that advance the UWs vision for improving population health. The Scientist will support research study design, complete quantitative analysis, lead data collection and management activities, offer project management leadership, oversee the work of assigned Graduate Student Research Assistants, and support the preparation of research-related presentations and publications. Strong organizational, project management, managerial, and problem-solving skills, as well as meticulous attention to detail, are critical to the success of this position.        



Duties and Responsibilities:


Plan and Direct Data Collection and Management Activities


- Participate or lead the development of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods and strategies for data management.

- Coordinate multiple data collection efforts, which may include collaborating with entities external to the university.

- Extract, format, and transform data from multiple sources according to set protocols and in consultation with the research team to best meet their needs.

- Prepare summaries of data quality as well as progress toward data collection, cleaning, and analysis targets.

- Use statistical and database management programs to query and analyze data.



Lead Research/Project Management Activities


- Manage research projects, overseeing timelines and other details as assigned to ensure that work is successfully executed and completed within timeframes to meet research objectives.

- Work with initiative leadership to identify and execute appropriate management of problems and concerns.

- Lead preparation for, and participate in, status update and planning meetings with project sponsors.

- Oversee the assembly and submission of needed interim reporting required to ensure projects are moving toward timely completion and achievement of research objectives.

- Independently execute related projects in support of the initiatives research projects.



Leadership and Team Management


- Leads the day-to-day operations of assigned projects, including recruiting, hiring, managing, and coaching of Graduate Research Student Assistants.

- Proactively identifies potential challenges, recommends solutions, and works collaboratively to resolve issues.

- Establishes and maintains account management procedures, including reviewing regular budget

reports and ensuring accurate reconciliation with UW accounting reports and relevant grant award requirements.

- Analyzes and develops cost saving strategies, offering analysis and recommendations as needed.



Support Study Research Design


- Participate in developing the research design for assigned projects.

- Develop necessary protocols, process descriptions, and training materials to ensure efficient operations across the team.



Prepare Manuscripts and Reports


- Draft and edit technical reports, progress reports, manuscripts, and illustrations for publication and/or presentation.

- Design, create, edit, and update web-based materials, working with technical staff and others as needed.

- Manage schedule to ensure timely submission to meet deadlines, obtain supporting materials, understand established guidelines and requirements for publication, and assist with submission as needed.



Miscellaneous:


- Performs additional duties as assigned that fall within the reasonable scope of this position.                            



Required Qualifications:


-  Bachelor's degree in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, math, quantitative social sciences, or another population health-related discipline

-  Minimum of four years of population health-related research experience.

-  Experience with multiple modes of quantitative and qualitative data collection, management, and analysis.

-  Working ability with at least one statistical programming language.

-  Strong organizational, project management, managerial, and problem-solving abilities.

-  Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills, and the ability to develop positive relationships with colleagues across the university.

-  Ability to perform tasks independently with precision, accuracy, and meticulous attention to detail.

-  Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, managing multiple priorities while coordinating the resources needed to meet deadlines.

-  Strong desire to learn new intellectual content across different disciplines in a timely fashion.
