Overview
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is seeking a highly motivated scientist, including mathematician with background of applied math and artificial intelligence, who is capable of leading a scientific endeavor to extend our understanding of radio-frequency (RF) waves in plasmas by improving our present-day simulation capability of such waves.
Qualified applicants should apply and send a curriculum vitae and bibliography. Three letters of recommendation will be requested for finalists.
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
Responsibilities
This position will include two main topical research: (i) develop the RF wave simulation model which self-consistently account the interactions with edge plasmas and validate it through various experiments including NSTX-U, and (ii) advance our capability of computing the radio-frequency (RF) wave field with artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) technology and new hardware architectures.
A successful candidate will be responsible for:
Expanding the various physics and solver components in the Petra-M FEM platform
Actively involved with the DOE’s RF SciDAC project and with AI/ML engineers and Advanced Science Computing Research (ASCR) scientists at BNL and LLNL.
Contribution to the HHFW modeling together with the PPPL RF group in preparation of the upcoming NSTX-U experiments is also anticipated.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in plasma physics, applied math, or a closely related discipline is required
Post-doc experience in the area of either radio-frequency wave physics research or AI/ML algorithm development in the context of Maxwell equation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of radio-frequency wave physics in plasmas.
Experience in computational physics code development is desirable including: Scientific code development using finite elements or other discretization.
Collaborative experience with code authors and other software engineers.
Fluency in the scientific programing languages such as C/C , FORTRAN and Python
Familiarity with AI/ML libraries such as PyTORCH.
Linear solvers and pre-conditioners.
