The cross cutting themes (CCT) at Peninsula Medical School comprise medical humanities, sociology, psychology, population health, ethics and law. Due to recent expansion CCT staff now deliver an integrated and inter professional syllabus to increased student numbers and sites and we have the opportunity to recruit a permanent, full time lecturer to complement the existing team. We are seeking an individual interested in developing curricula relating to the critical study of the social, cultural, political and economic aspects of clinical practice and person-centred care. Working with clinicians and students to explore the impact of health inequalities, advocacy for wellbeing and co-production with patients and publics, the post will involve a variety of educational modes, settings and sites. Primarily, the new role will entail assisting and co-leading developments in the medical humanities and medical sociology, with greater links to population health. We are particularly interested in integrating these subjects with an ethnographic approach to understanding clinical systems, care environments and personal, professional and patient narratives. Central to this will be consideration of critical theories of human action and interaction. You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in the medical humanities, sociology or clinical/medical anthropology and a demonstrable understanding of how ‘the social’ and ‘the cultural’ are integral to the professional practice of healthcare delivery. This post is on the ‘balanced’ pathway and there is a requirement to make a contribution to the research activities of the School. This could be, but is not restricted to developing, with CCT colleagues, an area of research with an emphasis on theoretical approaches to ‘the social and cultural’ in health professions education. The Cross Cutting Themes group is part of a larger vibrant, multidisciplinary team of core education-focussed academic staff. As a core member of the education team, you will take on a variety of general education-focussed roles, including small group facilitation, curriculum development, coordination of course delivery, academic tutoring and the delivery of student-selected units. In addition, in line with the University’s/School’s strategy, you will carry out leadership, management and social / community engagement activities. With respect to these, there are opportunities to contribute to our widening participation schemes and other health related programmes delivered within the Faculty.
