Departmental Overview The College of Engineering (COE) at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 250 regular faculty members, 1, 800 graduate students and 3,200 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. The Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department (IEOR) is an academic department within the College of Engineering (COE). IEOR is home to 15 core faculty, 6 emeriti, 4-5 lecturers, and 8-10 visiting scholars. The department offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees; as well as two professional master's programs - Master of Engineering (MEng) and Master of Analytics. IEOR is at the forefront of research and teaching of operations research and analytics methods, as well as the advancement of quantitative methodologies to solve problems in the areas of healthcare, supply chains, energy, security, finance, and e-commerce. The department has strong ties with other departments in the UC Berkeley College of Engineering and enjoys close relationships with the departments of Statistics, Mathematics, and Economics, as well as with the Haas School of Business. The incumbent will be using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, providing the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. The Student Services Advisor independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues and works with the department's /school's / college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. The incumbent will provide guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair / dean and faculty of the department /school / college. May administer funds for student programs. Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: 3/4/22 - Open Until Filled Responsibilities 45% Academic Advising: Advises faculty on departmental / college and university policies and procedures. Reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree / program completion. Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions. Independently advises students and resolves student and academic issues. Advises and recommends changes to faculty and staff on student and academic issues, policies, and protocols. Advises student groups on social and academic activities. Maintain productive and mutually beneficial relationships with other campus offices, most prominently the other student service advisors in the College of Engineering departments, the Fung Institute, and Graduate Division. Maintains graduate student records for functions pertaining to the students' progress in the program up to, and including, the awarding of the degree. Ensure excellent service and accurate student records. 35% Recruitment and Admissions: Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted domestic and international institutions. Provides professional service and support to prospective applicants and admits. Advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria. Helps review and rank applicants for admissions, evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility. Initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley. Arrange in state, national and international recruitment travel. Manages annual applicant interview process. Manages applicant inquiry database. Evaluates the success of current outreach efforts; develops and implements enhancements. 10% Events: Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events: Responsible for planning and managing orientation programs for new students; Plans additional student services community-building events such as coffee hours. Supports other IEOR department events, including commencement, prospective grad student info sessions, etc. Helps plan and execute commencement. * Recruitment visits - Responsible for planning, implementing, and managing recruitment visits of prospective graduate students to IEOR - Visit day. 5% Financial Aid: Helps oversee the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards. Advises students on financial aid options of the organization, funding eligibility, and extra-mural fellowship opportunities. 5% Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Solid verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Preferred Qualifications Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility /authorization for international students and scholars. Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
