Position:
This is a nine-month, Tenure-Line Assistant Professor position with 75% Research and 25% Teaching appointment in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department (ABE) and it is co-sponsored by the College of Agricultural Sciences (CoAS) and the Materials Research Institute (MRI) at Penn State.
Research responsibilities:
The successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program relating to the development of sustainable, biodegradable electronic and/or sensing devices and systems for agricultural applications including smart/digital agriculture, precision animal agriculture, animal health and behavior monitoring, environmental monitoring, food and water quality assessment, food packaging, food supply chain monitoring, post-harvest processing, and other agricultural applications. The candidate is expected to provide leadership within the Penn State community in sustainable biodegradable electronics. The candidate will advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in diverse, multicultural, and transdisciplinary global programs. The candidate will maintain high pedagogical standards and contribute to our positive and engaging scholastic community.
Teaching responsibilities
: The candidate is expected to teach two courses per year. Potential teaching responsibilities include one course to fulfill teaching needs related to the biodegradable sensors and their applications within the ABE department's programs (e.g., BRS 423: Deterioration and Protection of Bioproducts) and one new course to be determined. The ABE Department fosters a highly collaborative scholastic culture supporting course and curriculum development.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is required. One degree (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) must be from a scientific, engineering, or technology field. Candidate must have performed research or taken coursework related to sustainability, sustainable materials and/or sustainable electronic devices. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students across the University is required. Effective communication to provide creative leadership, and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, industry and agency groups is paramount. Demonstrated ability to function in a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary team environment is a requirement. The person should have the capability to carry out original, independent, and innovative and nationally visible research and teaching program. Experience with intellectual property is desirable. The successful candidate is expected to implement Ethics, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion into all aspects of the candidate's work, including courses, and will actively strive to provide an inclusive learning environment for all students.

: It is the mission of the ABE department to advance global sustainability through engineering sciences, business, and technical management of biological and agricultural systems.
