Job Summary
Serve as lead technician in PCR primer preparation for all testing and research activities at the Veterinary Genetics Lab (VGL). Be responsible for the preparation of PCR primer mixtures for production testing. Perform quality control checks on reagents generated and make necessary modification to
existing formulas for optimal product generation. Responsible for maintaining primer stocks, primer database, multiplex formulas, storage freezers, and primer preparation bench. Responsible for maintaining and preparing reagents for production testing. Maintain the laboratory inventory and distilled water system for the laboratory.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Lift and maneuver up to 30 lbs. of equipment and supplies.
Must be able to tolerate the sight of blood and occasional foul odors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work in a secured animal research area.
Work in a busy lab with heavy traffic and little privacy.
Follow EH&S guidelines and laboratory protocols for safe handling of chemicals and biological materials.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Experience working in a high throughput lab and operating micro-pipettes.
Experience with DNA quantification, reagent calculations, and parameters affecting PCR reactions.
Experience learning detailed procedures quickly and following detailed protocols with minimal supervision and high accuracy.
Skill to make independent critical decisions and effectively prioritize tasks on a daily basis, establishing priorities for one's self and the flexibility to adapt to fluctuating workloads.
Interpersonal and oral communication skills to effectively interact, coordinate work, and train others.
Skill to exercise discretion and protect confidentiality of records.
Skills to operate PCs and manage databases.
Preferred:
Ability to identify and troubleshoot technical problems and implement modifications to solve problems.
Knowledge of microsatellite DNA markers used by VGL.
Skills to understand and interpret electrophoretic profiles of genetic markers using STRand software to evaluate genotypes and primer balance in PCR reactions.
Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology reagent preparation and chemical calculation.
