As the chief academic officer and second-ranking member of the administration, the provost has responsibility for and oversight of the institution’s entire academic enterprise, catalyzing growth and innovation while maintaining and championing excellence. The successful candidate will be a tested, decisive, collaborative, empathetic, and transparent leader who will provide strategic direction and strong management in overseeing the university’s schools, research centers, and institutes. The provost will work closely and collaboratively with the president, the vice president for finance and administration, the vice president for research, deans, and other key leaders to advance the university’s mission, and will preside over the affairs of the university in the absence of the president. As the chief academic officer with oversight of the academic budget, the provost will be responsible for ensuring that financial, capital, physical, and human resources are aligned with the mission and priorities of the university. The successful candidate will enhance the academic distinction of the university by attracting and supporting a growing number of preeminent faculty members and scholars and by fostering a culture of dean-led strategic innovation that bolsters student success. Over the next several years, Rice will experience significant and strategic growth within the faculty ranks; approximately 200 faculty will be recruited in the coming 5-6 years. The provost will have the opportunity to significantly shape the future of the university through these hires. The provost will also work closely with admissions, enrollment services, and student affairs leadership to strengthen the links between students’ academic success and overall development and well-being, sense of shared learning, reflection, and engagement.
