About the organization
The proposed Institute for Research on the Information Environment (IRIE) will be an international, multi sector non-profit organization focused on solving the pressing issues related to influence operations and disinformation. Its mission will be to facilitate policy-relevant research on the information environment and its impact on democratic deliberation and politics broadly defined.
Position Overview
As part of a start-up team, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to all aspects of the design process and lead a team of research specialists in developing reports on: best practices for managing shared scientific infrastructure; policies related to sharing sensitive social media data; financial models at similar institutions; and related initiatives at existing centers and institutes. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also play a key role in developing research partnerships and planning data collection and analytics processes.
Responsibilities
Lead surveys of the research community to identify collections, tools, and analytic capabilities that would accelerate research on the
information environment and its impact on democratic deliberation and politics more broadly.
Conduct reviews of existing research processes being used to study misinformation and the impact of social media on society.
Execute studies on the impact of misinformation on real-world outcomes, such as public health, voting behavior, or economic
activity.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
The Princeton-Carnegie team seeks candidates with exceptional potential who have experience conducting research on social media
and its impact on society broadly defined.
Ideal candidates will have done work on large text corpora in communications, computer science, data science, economics, political
science, sociology, or other applied fields.
Preference will be given to scholars with a successful track record of applying innovative technology in operational settings in
addition to research experience.
Experience working with social media platforms and/or technology companies is a plus.
Relevant language skills (Russian, Chinese, or major European languages) will be taken into account.
The candidate must have earned their Ph.D. no earlier than September 1, 2017.
