Job Summary
Under direction, independently responsible for the performance of organic analyses for the determination of industrial and naturally occurring toxins in animal tissues, biological specimens and source material.
Responsible for development of new test procedures for the analysis of toxicants in biological materials, food, or other matrices, with minimal assistance from supervisors or other senior personnel. Present new test procedures at technical meetings and conferences.
Responsible for training other analysts in the use of advanced instrumentation such as gas and liquid chromatographs and mass spectrometers and in the performance of analytical methods used in the Toxicology section. Maintain quality control and participate in the update and development of Standard Operating Procedures.

Initial placement will be between $60,505.92-$72,298.80/Year, commensurate with educational background and relevant experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to distinguish between colors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is subject to Vaccination Program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2, is/might subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
This position is not eligible for remote work, due to the nature of the essential responsibilities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period)
Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation.
Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.)
Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.

This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.
Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.
All CAHFS employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries.
Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program.
Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials.
May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Master's degree in Chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of analytical chemistry and skill to critically understand, interpret, and perform techniques and procedures for analysis of biological samples as described in the Standard Operating Procedures.
Knowledge of sample preparation techniques such as solid phase and liquid-liquid sample extraction, acid digestion, sample spiking and matrix matching.
Flexibility to adapt to changes in work assignments based on shifts in priorities
Skills in the operation of a wide range of manual and computer- controlled analytical equipment such as Gas and Liquid Chromatographs, ICPs, Mass Spectrometers, UV Spec, etc.
Skills to maintain equipment and obtain maximum performance from instruments.
Knowledge of QA/QC systems such as ISO 17025 and skills to continually produce high quality data.
Preferred:
Ability to apply analytical procedures as described in literature.
Familiarity with literature sources of analytical procedures.
The ability to effectively communicate with internal and external peers in a variety of settings and formats.
