Archives and Special Collections
Curator
to join their team. Under the general supervision of the Head of Archives and Special Collections this position assists with the management of, and provision of access to, the department’s physical and electronic university records and manuscript collections in accordance with professional guidelines and best practices. Activities in this area include serving as the department lead for accessioning and inventorying newly acquired archival material, and managing the majority of the arrangement and description of university records and manuscript collections,
and serving as the lead for reference and research services for the department’s university records and manuscript collections. This position also serves as the general supervisor of Archives and Special Collections student employees.

Broad knowledge of Montana history and the history of the American West
Demonstrated research and writing skills
Experience conducting research with primary sources, including archival source material
Knowledge of and ability to learn and use constantly evolving information, outreach, and research access tools used by libraries and archives, including print and online catalogs and guides, computer databases, social media tools, and other resources
Knowledge of and experience with arranging and describing archival collections according to professional best practices
Knowledge of and experience with EAD (Encoded Archival Description) and DACS (Describing Archives: Content Standard)
Refined organization skills, accuracy and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects effectively, including prioritization and goal-setting skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service to internal and external users, including sometimes difficult or demanding customers
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
Ability to follow department procedure to assess the physical condition of collection materials
Ability to ensure the security and safe handling of archives and special collections materials by patrons and staff
Basic knowledge of supervisory principles and practices
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
Physical lifting and pushing loaded book carts are typical activities for this position
Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree as well as at least two (2) years of related work experience; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the competencies necessary to adequately handle the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position.
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree in a related field, or specialized trainings or certifications in a related field
Knowledge of and experience with arrangement and description of electronic records in archival collections;
Knowledge of and experience with the information management system ArchivesSpace;
Knowledge of and experience with outreach or marketing (such as through public programming, exhibits, websites or social media, etc.)
