This is an entry-level clinical teaching position within Suffolku2019s nationally ranked Clinical Programs. This position is designed for someone who wishes to launch a career in clinical legal education under the mentorship of a talented and experienced team of clinicians. u00A0The Fellow will be among a group of several clinical fellows developing and honing their clinical teaching skills through classroom teaching, supervision, and grant-funded activities in Clinical Programs.u00A0 The Fellow will have the opportunity to co-teach clinical seminar modules alongside full-time faculty, and may have the opportunity to teach a course outside of the clinic,u00A0depending on expertise and curricular needs. The Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, programs, and conferences on clinical pedagogy, scholarship, legal education, health law, and other topics.u00A0 u00A0The Fellow will supervise approximately 8 full-year clinical students in the Health Law Clinic, in which students represent low-income individuals with disabilities and/or their family members in a range of health-law matters, including adult guardianship matters, supported decision-making agreements, Social Security Disability matters, public and private health insurance appeals, and medical debt cases. Students also occasionally work on research or public policy projects related to disability rights and mental health law. The Fellow will help students develop their professional habits and essential lawyering skills, such as client interviewing and counseling, case theory development, fact investigation, drafting, advocacy, and resolving ethical dilemmas in practice.u00A0 u00A0The Fellow will be responsible for managing and overseeing the caseload of the Clinic, including intake, case opening and closing procedures, case assignments, review of all student work product, and appearing with students at case-related events. The Fellow will have the opportunity to foster partnerships with healthcare providers, other clinical programs, legal services organizations, government officials, and/or community advocates to advance the work of the Clinic and benefit its students. The Fellow may work with the Director of the Health Law Clinic to adjust the caseload of the Clinic to align with their interests and expertise.u00A0 u00A0The Fellow will be directly supervised by Sarah Boonin, who serves as the Director of the Health Law Clinic and the Associate Dean for Experiential Learning.u00A0 u00A0Hours and Duration: This position will begin on or about July 1, 2023, and is a full-time, 12-month position. There is a possibility of renewal for one or more additional years, depending on programmatic needs and funding.Qualifications:u00A0 Must be a member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar and qualified to represent clients in Massachusetts state courts, or able to waive into the Massachusetts Bar under SJC Rule 3:04, prior to the commencement of the Fellowship;At least two to three years of civil litigation/legal services experience in health law (broadly defined) is required; strong preference for experience in mental health law and disability rights, public benefits law (especially Social Security and/or Medicaid), health insurance appeals, and/or probate litigation (especially adult guardianships and supported decision-making);Experience working directly with historically marginalized clients and communities is required, including experience working with individuals with racially, ethnically, and/or socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.
