JOB SUMMARY
This position works under the direction of the Director of the Office of Veterans Affairs and Military Programs. Serves as lead administrator for the office with particular emphasis on conducting internal audits on a regular basis to ensure compliance with state and federal laws for veteran and military educational benefits used by students at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***..

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts Veterans Affairs (VA) Certifying Official responsibilities and State of CT Veteran and National Guard tuition waiver processing for student veterans at UConn.
Conducts internal audits. Compiles and reviews reports regularly to ensure compliance with state and federal laws in the application of veterans and military educational benefits. Ensures veterans and military benefits processing procedures are adjusted in accordance with applicable directives and/or in order to meet ever-changing requirements from the VA, DOD, etc.
Analyzes and responds, as necessary, to frequent/ongoing notifications from the VA regarding payments, debt letters, etc. Works closely with the Bursar's Office for veteran educational benefits payments and reconciliation.
Manages general office operations to ensure excellent service is provided to walk-in/call-in veterans who are seeking educational benefits counseling. Assists with training, getting access for staff on essential programs (VA Once, Image Now, Student Admin, etc.), and other onboarding activities for the main office.
Serves as the subject-matter expert on Veterans and military benefits regularly advising students, prospective students, and staff (in and outside of the Department). Mentors and advises student veterans transitioning to university life and college.
Represents the Office of Veterans Affairs & Military Programs and presents information at orientation, resource fairs, and other meetings and events at UConn, the V.A., and other community functions to better serve military-affiliated students and to help educate the larger community about military and veteran history and culture.
Significant responsibility managing certification and processing of veterans and military benefits at the regional campuses, including UConn Health Center and UConn Law, addressing specific nuanced and complex issues that arise specific to each campus/program.
Responds to inquiries from students, faculty, and others regarding program policies, procedures, and requirements, making referrals as appropriate.
Assists Director with audits on annual basis, and as needed, from state and federal agencies (i.e. VA, DOD, etc.).
Assists in the planning, coordination, and execution of program events.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree.
Five years of related work experience including one year serving as an advanced team member.
Proven ability to effectively work with diverse populations.
Demonstrated word-processing and computer training and expertise in MS Office, including Excel spreadsheets, Word, and PowerPoint.
Exceptional and demonstrated organizational skills and an ability to resolve routine problems professionally, efficiently, effectively, and independently.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with impeccable customer service skills.
Ability to work under tight deadlines, manage multiple assignments efficiently, and work independently with minimum supervision.
Experience with reconciling financial/student records and familiarity with audits.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's Degree.
Experience in higher education working with the student veteran population.
Experience with certifying VA veteran educational benefits.
Familiarity with the full range of state and federal veteran benefits to include, but not limited to educational benefits.
Prior Uniformed Services experience.
