Based within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business, the School of Art, Design and Architecture (ADA) offers high quality, student-centred degrees, postgraduate programmes and research opportunities relevant to today’s cultural, creative, architectural and design-related industries.The School has a growing international profile, with collaborations across the Far East, South America and Europe.Students learn from experienced practitioners who are experts in their field and join an intellectually stretching multidisciplinary learning community.In all areas there is a fundamental commitment to practice-based working and supporting students to develop as independent critical thinkers and practitioners. Studio work – and studio culture – permeate most of the School’s pedagogy, and are the central pivot underpinning all other modules and activities. We are looking for an inspiring practitioner-researcher who will contribute to our vision for a vibrant, interdisciplinary, outward-looking, expanded contemporary art programme. This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive team within the School of Art, Design and Architecture, which is located in the heart of Plymouth’s cultural quarter where we have active relationships with contemporary galleries such as KARST and The Box (the new £46m museum, gallery and archive) and are involved in hosting the British Art Show 9 (Autumn 2022). A coastal city on the Devon/Cornwall border, Plymouth is known for its vibrant artist-led culture. Fine Art at University of Plymouth celebrates each student’s artistic growth and builds the vital interdisciplinary skills needed to pursue a professional career. We are a hub for research and live projects that bring staff and students together with other courses, Schools and Faculties. Students are taught by artists who work internationally with installation, moving image, painting, performance, and social practice all grounded through critical enquiry. Our outstanding workshop facilities include traditional printmaking and screenprinting, audio and video production, digital fabrication, immersive media, ceramics, casting, wood, and metalwork. All students have placement opportunities with arts and educational organisations and with charities. You will be passionate about developing future growth and delivery and to building on our existing local, national and international networks. You will be engaged in research-led teaching and have opportunities to undertake postgraduate supervision. You will be dedicated to producing graduates with the critical, artistic, and interpersonal skills needed to contribute meaningfully to global creative and cultural industries. The role will involve module leadership and delivery; personal tutoring; and strategic leadership roles (on a rolling basis) across Admissions, Knowledge Exchange, Internationalisation, EDI, Research, and Marketing. The post is research-active and the post-holder is expected to define an individual research and innovation plan aligned with University of Plymouth’s 2030 Strategy. The University of Plymouth has a strong interdisciplinary research ethos which is supported by our three strategic Research Institutes: the Marine Institute, the Sustainable Earth Institute, and the Plymouth Institute of Health and Care Research. As a member of our academic community, you’ll be expected to contribute to our recognised research strengths. Working holistically across the University, you will be challenged to innovate, collaborate and deliver impactful research contributions as part of a systems thinking approach to addressing today’s global challenges.
