Teacher Test Bank - Website
Hi, Im a high school chemistry teacher (AP Chem) and our profession needs help to get better organized - theres just too much individual effort being conducted by too many teachers. This project would have such a profound impact on so many, and will likely become a resource for many teachers above and beyond my AP Chemistry. This scope of work is also just one part of a much larger concept that Id like to share with my peers.
Shared TEST Bank for AP Chemistry
Problem Statement:
For test security reasons, teachers do not allow students to take completed AP Chemistry tests outside the classroom. This policy exists to ensure that students do not give copies of these tests to future AP Chemistry students; thereby providing them with an unfair advantage.
This reality is too bad. For students enrolled an AP Chemistry course, being able to take a previously taken test home is a helpful study tool. Students can correct and learn from their errors by studying their old tests. They can use them to study for future exams.
So, the question becomes, “What keeps teachers from sending tests home?” The answer is simple – each teacher possesses too few questions and too little time to remake tests year after year. As an example, a teacher might possess three really strong, high quality questions for a specific topic (like acids/basis). If a teacher writes both a practice test and a real test, she or he might use two of those three questions; one question would be on the practice test, and one question would be included on the real test. The third question could be used on the following year’s test, but then there would be no additional questions available (in the test bank) to assess that specific skill.
The amount of time that it takes to draft a strong test question is extensive, yet teachers all across the United States are constantly re-inventing the wheel, independent of each other. What is needed is a collaborative repository of high-quality test questions to streamline the amount of work required by any single teacher, while offering superior test quality for the students.
Goal Statement:
The goal of the project is to build a website/portal through which AP Chemistry teachers can collaborate by submitting multiple-choice questions to a large test bank. Having numerous questions (for each learning objective) available in the test bank will enable teachers to release tests for subsequent use by the students. It will also enable the easy generation of both tests and practice tests.
Deliverables:
1) To provide a means for the teachers to log in to the password protected site.
2) To provide a website/portal for teachers to upload multiple choice questions. The questions will need to be added to pre-determined subtopics of AP Chem (acids/bases, electro-chemistry, covalent bonding, etc.).
3) To provide a means for an admin to control the subtopic headings and the content on the site.
4) To provide a way for teachers to generate tests from questions in the bank for a specific subject/topic by selecting from the hundreds of available questions.
5) The have a way for the teacher to upload solutions to the test bank problems.
6) To provide a means for the teacher to print out an answer key (5, above) for each of the questions on the test.
7) To have the name of the contributor referenced on the website for each question in the bank.
8) To have a way for teachers to offer feedback (comments/rank) regarding the quality of the test question (1 star – not good, 5 stars - good).
