Profile

Description:
The opportunity to lead the School of Society and Culture at the University of Plymouth is a unique and compelling one. The School brings together subjects that are at the forefront of contemporary society, and through high quality research and teaching, it is addressing some of the world's most pressing social issues, from social justice and cultural diversity to legal and educational challenges. The mission of the School is to develop students who are not just well-educated but who also have the skills, creativity, and vision to shape the future. The School is also home to a diverse collection of researchers working in the social sciences and humanities. We’re dedicated to advancing knowledge for public benefit, driving meaningful change in our society and enriching communities (be they near us or an ocean away). We are especially proud to report that the most recent REF 2021 exercise demonstrated the strength of our research, with the majority of our ‘outputs’ (books, articles, performances), ‘impactful activity’ (for public benefit), and ‘environment’ (including our PhD graduates, and externally-funded grant awards) rated at 3* or 4. Approachable and visible, the role brings confident leadership amidst a context of rapid change within the University and HE sector as a whole. You will need to be adept at direction setting, delegation and engaging staff in their part in delivering results for the sustainable success of the School, Faculty and University. You will be a member of the Faculty Executive Team and the Senior Leadership Team. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding leadership ability with a strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges in further developing a thriving School, with a proven track record of senior leadership and management in an equivalent context, as well as a commitment to working collaboratively and in partnership with staff and students across the School and more widely. The Head of School will normally be a professor in their field who is now seeking an opportunity to build on the School’s success to date and lead it forward during a time of change and opportunity. To be successful you will need to demonstrate both the motivation for and capability in leadership and management. You will bring leadership and management experience and an ability to engage staff, peers and students as you work collaboratively to deliver results. Your ability to navigate and lead others through change will be critical to the success of the School.
