(ABIII)
invite applications for a
Native American Student Support Specialist.
This position will focus on the recruitment, retention, and overall success of Native American students in ABIII and Baucus Institute programs. The NASS Specialist will work closely with ABIII and Institute staff, Law and Department of Public Administration and Policy (DPAP) faculty, and will build relationships and facilitate collaboration with stakeholders and partners across campus and throughout the state.
Duties and responsibilities:
Manage the day-to-day operations of ABIII’s Native American Cultural Center in the School of Law as a supportive, culturally sensitive environment.
Design and implement strategies to increase Native American students’ overall enrollment and persistence in ABIII and Institute programs (including Law and DPAP).
Serve as a mentor, advocate, and resource for Native American students enrolled in ABIII (Law and DPAP) and Institute programs. Proactively help students navigate roadblocks on their path to completing their studies and internships.
Work closely with Institute staff to identify program opportunities that best align with Native American student and community interests and needs, as well as areas for program development to better meet those interests and needs.
Build relationships with Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) throughout Montana and facilitate partnerships with the Institute and ABIII (Law and DPAP) based on respect and cultural understanding.
Provide support for the ABIII Native American Law Student Association (NALSA)
Build relationships across campus with **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s Payne Center, American Indian Support Services (AISS), UM’s American Indian Governance Institute, and the UM Tribal Outreach Specialist to foster connections and collaboration.
Provide regular feedback and close communication with key ABIII (Law and DPAP) and Institute staff to identify opportunities to better support Native American student needs and concerns from a perspective that includes first generation, veteran, disabled, gender, LGBTQ and two-spirit, low-income, rural, and other significant aspects of individual and cultural identity.
Assist with the Margery Hunter Brown Indian Law Clinic, the Summer Indian Law Program, and the American Indian Law Certificate.
Coordinate with University and ABIII Communications teams to share information and engage in the process of promoting Native American student and program successes

Position Details
Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

Position is a grant-funded opportunity for two years, with possibility of extension.
Salary for this position is $50,000-$60,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience working with Native American populations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of Native American history and cultures, particularly those in the Rocky Mountain West
Strong writing and oral communication skills
Ability to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with a wide-ranging group of individuals and entities
Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for working with students to attain their academic and life goals
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations and information appropriately
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in higher education
