General Description:
The Campus Counselor provides general academic, transfer, career and crisis counseling to students through individual appointments and walk-in or virtual interactions. The counselor is the lead person on campus for educating students, faculty members and staff on issues related to their specialty roles. Each counselor will be assigned one or more special areas of focus such as academic success, CARE team (BIT), transfer, etc. This position focuses on behavioral intervention for students in distress and participate as part of a Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). Responsibilities include direct interactions, relationship building, case management, program development and leadership in support of students at NOVA who need holistic social, emotional, and academic support.
Job Duties:
Maintain a student caseload of approximately 300 students.
Teach Student Development (SDV) College Success Skills classes, a total of 5 per year with an enrollment of 30-40 students in each section.
Design and facilitate workshops for faculty members and students on a variety of topics including academic success, wellness, working with distressed students, career and academic advising, and other topics.
Collaborate with college faculty, staff, and administrators.
Respond to students in distress and manage challenging academic cases.
Participate on College task forces, pathway councils, leadership committees, and working groups.
Manage assignments which relate to programming, direct service delivery to students, and student caseloads regarding advising and outreach for academic life management concerns.
Participate in regular professional development as required and/or relevant to the assigned work.
Required KSAs:
Knowledge of counseling and student development theories and best practices.
Skill in providing academic, personal, transfer, and career counseling to adolescents and adults and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to provide ongoing support for academic life management and an understanding of case management.
Ability to de-escalate high emotion situations and appropriately involve other college resources and supports.
Understanding of case management.
Ability to promote inclusive counseling sessions and a campus climate respectful of diversity and multiculturalism.
Informed of current equity issues in community colleges.
Ability to utilize interpersonal and problem-solving skills to collaborate and negotiate with students, faculty, staff, parents, members of the community and university representatives.
Knowledge of relevant federal, state, VCCS, and college policies and regulations including the Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA), Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Title IX, and VAWA/SaVE, and Clery legislation.
Ability to understand, disseminate, interpret, and communicate College policies and regulations using approved and accepted processes and practices.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, to include the development of letters, memos, and course materials and the ability to present to large and small audiences.
Teaching skills.
Ability to design, implement, and evaluate programs.
Ability to collaborate on the development, assessment and reporting of student learning outcomes and other assessment measures.
Ability to conduct responsibilities while demonstrating excellent customer service skills.
Knowledge and skills in computer usage including Microsoft Office, e-mail, student information systems, Adobe Acrobat Reader, social media and use of the Internet to complete research.
Ability to understand and conceptualize data needs and utilize database systems to generate reports.
Ability to occasionally travel to off-campus work sites such as other campuses, college sites, or local universities.
Ability to work in a fast-paced academic advising environment.
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Counseling or an appropriately qualifying field related to the position. Qualifying degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
Experience providing academic advising and counseling to college students or prospective college students.
Experience working with adolescents and/or adults in distress and awareness of mental health issues and appropriate referrals.
Teaching or workshop facilitation experience.
Experience with students/persons in the areas of student academic life management and mental health referral, support or management.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience providing multidisciplinary advising and counseling in a higher education setting.
Experience teaching college success courses.
Bilingual proficiency in a foreign language frequently spoken in Northern Virginia households.
Experience working with individuals in the areas of student academic life management or equivalent experience.
