invites applications for the
GEAR UP First Year Services Program Manager
. Reporting to the Executive Director of the UM Office for Student Success (OSS), this position is responsible for developing, maintaining, and assessing the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) First Year Services program at UM. This program will work in close partnership with OSS and various student support units across campus and the Student Success/Student Affairs sector.
Working within this context, the position will include, but not be limited to, the following expectations and responsibilities:
Develop an educational program to be offered to all first-year UM GEAR UP students that will provide holistic and proactive support and various engagement opportunities to students as they transition into the University environment and throughout their first year of study.
Assess Program efficacy through identification of student and program outcomes, establishing feedback and data structures to gather information on outcomes, evaluating services and activities, and adapting program as appropriate.
Manage the Program grant budget independently and provide quarterly financial and program reports to the project director and to the grant sponsors at the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE).
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of GEAR UP student mentors.
Meet independently with students to foster their academic success and personal growth and development.
Regularly collaborate with various campus student support personnel on appropriate strategies to benefit the GEAR UP first-year students, including, but not limited to: academic advisors, American Indian Student Services, career coaches, tutors, and financial education staff.
Manage purchasing and accounting of all program equipment, supplies, student materials, promotional materials, and other program materials and expenses.
Coordinate planning for all GEAR UP First Year Services Program events.
Develop and maintain UM GEAR UP First Year Services Program website and communications plan.
Serve as a representative of UM for state conferences and national professional development opportunities, presentations, symposiums, trainings, and other events related to GEAR UP.
Required Skills
Program management experience in planning, development, and implementation.
Strong written and verbal communication skills including sensitivity to open-ended questioning, non-verbal communication, and active listening; demonstrated presentation and public speaking skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with faculty, staff and student populations.
Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
Ability to use the use of integrated online and web-based tools to support student success initiatives
Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Exceptional customer service and organizational skills.
Strong computer and analytical skills.
A strong commitment to serving students and their needs, including active listening skills to help students identify barriers to success.
A creative approach to problem solving and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, faculty and parents.
Demonstrated experience working with a wide range of constituents.
Minimum Required Experience
High School diploma and two (2) years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with students, especially students from underrepresented backgrounds.
