JOB SUMMARY
The Student-Athlete Success Program (SASP) seeks applicants for the position of Academic Counselor (Student Services Program Coordinator). The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic team that work specifically with student-athletes who are members of the football program. This position will be expected to work with an energetic team of professional advisors and various campus partners across the university to support students in their academic and personal goals by promoting student-centered partnerships. There is also a clear expectation this person has a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in every aspect of their work.


This position will assist students in navigating their transition to the college experience as well as supporting the exploration of various educational and career goals. This position, working with SASP team members, will also work with students and campus partners to implement strategies to increase student retention and academic success. This includes planning and coordinating academic support to maximize students' use of university academic support resources. This position will provide ongoing academic counseling, and monitoring of academic progress as it pertains to the university and NCAA. Academic counselors should have a strong knowledge of the unique challenges student-athletes face. This position will be expected to communicate with coaches, athletic administration, faculty, advisors, prospective students, and other campus partners to ensure a high level of student support and success.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with the Football Lead, provides individualized academic success plans for students to support their educational needs, career goals and professional development.
Advises students regarding coursework, university, graduation, and NCAA requirements, policies, and procedures
In collaboration with SASP team members, attends to the special needs of this unique student population by creating and implementing specialized programs and services through collaboration with other student-centered offices.
Serves as liaison for books with Office of Athletics Compliance and Barnes and Noble, handling course changes during the add/drop period and coordinating books and resources from other vendors as required.
Monitors football-specific student-athlete study halls.
Assist in assessing academic needs of student-athletes, and coordinate and carry out appropriate strategies and intervention.
Monitors academic development of students through progress reports, instructor contact, and official records to ensure students are progressing towards degrees.
Works effectively with students, support networks, coaches and campus partners to enhance the educational atmosphere that fosters student success.
Makes appropriate referrals to other student success services such as SASP Learning Services, Student-Athlete Development, Career Services, and Mental Health Services.
Assists in evaluating how services are delivered and recommends plans for improvement.
Meets with prospective student-athletes and their support networks to provide an overview of the university and the Student-Athlete Success Program.
Creates, maintains, and appropriately updates files, records and student documentation and assists in compiling reports.
Participates in university activities, committees, workshops, community outreach and professional development opportunities.
May serve as an instructor for First-Year Experience (FYE) course.
Performs additional duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related field and four years of position-related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support, OR advanced degree in a related field and two years of related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support.
Ability and knowledge to support undergraduate students, including first-generation college student and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team setting
Ability to build rapport with students, support networks, and university partners
Proven ability to work effectively with student-athletes from diverse ethnic, educational and cultural backgrounds, and familiarity with the academic and social issues faced by students.
Demonstrate a concrete working knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules and regulations.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff and university constituents.
Ability to work occasional nights, weekends and travel occasionally for work purposes
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of factors that influence the overall development and academic achievement of student-athletes at the Division I level and the proven ability to support those students.
Skilled application of the Microsoft Office Suite, with emphasis on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, Moodle. GradesFirst, and Blackboard experience a plus.
Able to demonstrate the ability to teach Life Skills topics.
