JOB SUMMARY
The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC) is seeking a Data Scientist to join our research and analysis team. This position will assist the Center in the analysis of crash data with respect to human factors and human behavior. This Data Scientist position will become a subject matter expert for human factors and driver behavior analysis for CTSRC. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with our database administrators and the Connecticut Department of Transportation to analyze transportation safety data from a variety of databases collected across several state agencies. This Data Scientist position will be responsible for the development of data-driven reports and analytics for emerging transportation safety issues. The successful candidate will also advise the CTDOT on how to evaluate and address current trends seen in fatal and serious injury crashes occurring in the state. They may also help the CTDOT and CTSRC develop data visualizations, annual reports, and make recommendations on how to reduce risk-taking behavior by both drivers and non-motorist.

The CTSRC is part of the Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) which is comprised of three distinct research centers, the Technical Assistance and Training Center, The Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory, and CTSRC. The CTSRC is the home of the Connecticut Crash Data Repository. CTI was established at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. and operates within the School of Engineering. CTI's mission is to conduct integrated multidisciplinary research, education, and related services that promote safety and efficiency in multi-modal passenger and freight transportation systems and, in turn, enhance livable communities, sustainable economies, and the environment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and deploy updates and changes to databases containing a wide variety of transportation safety data.
Work with our IT team to design, document, and maintain the transportation safety analysis reporting system and databases.
Serve as liaison with CTDOT, DPH, DESPP, and other state agencies when discussing and evaluating transportation safety issues.
Design and develop data models to support human factors dashboards and public-facing reports.
Present research work at national and international scientific conferences and other appropriate settings.
Apply statistical and research principles and techniques to a wide variety of issues and projects.
Develop research designs and statistically sound protocols and works with staff to carry out specific research studies.
Develop statistical and computerized models for analyzing data and interprets results to support business and client needs and facilitate informed recommendations and decisions.
Perform complex statistical analyses such as predictive modeling, forecasting, multiple regression, trend analysis, log linear analysis, factor analysis, and multivariate analysis.
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various statistical techniques and research designs, selecting those which achieve the most valid results.
Continually research new methods and emerging/evolving technology as it applies to the field of data science and aid in implementing technology solutions where appropriate.
Develop and provide documentation and training on developed tools and processes for the end-user of developed products, reports, dashboards, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The position requires a B.A. or B.S. and four to five years of post-degree experience or an M.A. or M.S. and two to four years of post-degree experience.
A degree in statistics, public health, transportation, resource management, or a related field.
Expertise with SQL and database systems.
Expertise with sustainable automating processes for ETL procedures and other database management tasks.
Expertise with data analysis and visualization software. Such as, but not limited to: R, Python, Tableau, PowerBI, ESRI Insights, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in a related field.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and a record of public or critical stakeholder engagement.
Experience developing data analysis reports from large datasets across multiple databases.
Demonstrated experience developing related databases, and experience with a variety of data linkage methodologies/solutions.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment. The position may be annually renewable based on performance, budget, and needs of the Department and College.
