The HOPE initiative is designed to examine and eliminate the social, institutional, and academic barriers that often prevent males of color from achieving their full potential at BHCC and beyond. This asset-based, student-centered initiative is run by a group of faculty, staff, and students who are focused on three main areas: qualitative/quantitative data collection, analysis and dissemination; assessing and addressing gaps in College programs and services, and affinity-based mentoring. Reporting to the Interim Director of the HOPE Initiative in the Division of Academic Support & College Pathway Programs, the HOPE Success Coordinator will use equity-minded practices to guide students to and through College services and processes, including, but not limited to: Admissions, Assessment, Financial Aid, Advising/LifeMap, course registration, exploration and planning. The Navigator will make appropriate referrals where necessary, playing a central role in guiding and empowering students to access resources and services, and to plan and implement their education and career objectives for individualized success.
Specific Duties:
The HOPE Success Coordinator is responsible for assisting with developing and delivering culturally responsive services and programming with a focus on Black and Latino male students that may include but are not limited to the following:
Create and deliver culturally responsive student services and programming aimed at improving student access, engagement, retention, and graduation.
Utilize intrusive advising and proactively assess needs; complete holistic assessment of student needs to facilitate appropriate referrals and provide outreach to students at key points in the semester.
Assist with the advisement and registration of new and continuing students regarding their academic plan, course selection/sequencing, curriculum/concentration selection and changes, career exploration and plans to transition to a 4-year institution.
Build collaborative relationships with resource centers on campus to provide smooth connections (Warm Handoffs) to appropriate success services, such as: Admissions, Assessment, Student Central, LifeMap, Student Activities, Single Stop/The DISH, departmental advisors, tutoring, supplemental instruction, or accommodations for disabilities; financial literacy skills development; and emergency assistance.
Collaborate with HOPE Leadership Team and other campus departments in the design, marketing, implementation and assessment of HOPE programming, including but not limited to: academic success workshops, Welcome Days, student celebration events, and Student Dialogue Series
Work closely with HOPE Leadership, Admissions and LifeMap staff, and Institutional Research to gather, analyze, and interpret data to monitor students' progress.
Collaborate with HOPE Ambassadors to answer student questions and provide self-service assistance via WebEx.
Participate in college meetings, community engagement, and outreach activities as needed.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Cultural and Community Studies, Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology or a closely related field, with three (3) years of experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project development and/or management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience working with diverse students in a fast-paced student services/client services or equivalent setting.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with a range of different academic and non-academic units, and community-based organizations.
Excellent intercultural, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
Proficiency in student information systems as well as MS Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual in Spanish, Portuguese or Haitian Creole.
Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Experience managing and supervising staff/students.
Experience working with underrepresented groups.
Experience working at a community college, nonprofit and/or community-based organization.
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $49,711.00-$55,591.00. Actual Salary Will Be Commensurate With Education & Experience in Accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full state Benefits.
This position is funded through State appropriation subject to continuation.
Grade: 4, Unit Professional, funding is subject to appropriation.
