This post is one of a group that have been funded by the SWCRN and also the Public Health Determinants Research Collaborative in Plymouth, which have similar aims and the team of researchers will work together with mutual support locally in the council and university, but also this post will network will colleagues with similar roles in other councils and the SWCRN. Your employment contract will be with the University of Plymouth, but your primary work base will be at Plymouth City Council, where you will hold an honorary contract and have an assigned workspace. Some remote working will be possible. You will also have access to and be supported by colleagues in the Centre for Primary and Community Research Group in the Faculty of Health. Background to the post: The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) is the research delivery arm of the NIHR in England. It is led by a national Coordinating Centre and operates through 15 Local Research Networks. These local Networks support delivery of funded research across 30 specialties of which Public Health is one. The CRN has historically been a clinical NHS based network but in January 2018, it extended its remit and eligibility criteria to support studies taking place outside the NHS. This change was needed to ensure that the network could support public health and prevention research taking place in non-health settings, for example schools and community settings. This research includes the new UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP) consortia. These will deliver a shift change in public health research which focuses on understanding the system-wide effects of interventions to reduce non-communicable disease risk and reduce inequalities in risk. To help deliver this wider remit the South West Peninsula Clinical Research Network has funded the creation of a public health research support officer post to support local authorities to grow their research capabilities in the longer-term, by supporting and promoting research and developing linkages across local authority, health and academic organisations and the CRN core team. You will be expected to become familiar with multiple organisational structures and the Clinical Research Network, South West Peninsula. You will work with other Research Officers in similar roles across the region. The Health Determinants Research Collaborations (HDRCs) is partnership between the University of Plymouth and Plymouth City Council, and is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The programme funding provides funding to embed a culture of evidence-based decision-making within local government. The HDRCs will help to stimulate economic growth, particularly in some of the most deprived areas of the country and contribute to the Government’s plans to take action for the longer-term resilience of the health and wealth of the country.
