This job is responsible for the supervision and coordination of daily pharmacy operations for multiple sites or sites with greater than 20 direct reports.  An incumbent may function as a working supervisor in the performance of pharmaceutical care activities and provision of related services in accordance with established policies, procedures, State and Federal regulatory requirements and Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission-approved protocols.  Work also includes:  1) responsibility for meeting financial objectives in labor, revenue and gross margins; 2) evaluating department effectiveness; 3) ensuring optimum staffing levels; 4) supervising the work of subordinate staff, including performance management issues; and 5) assisting employees in performing all technical/clinical department activities. 
 
Work requires a thorough understanding of professional pharmacy procedures and standards of practice, as well as regulatory requirements relating to pharmaceutical care.  Performance improvement efforts cover a variety of processes, and an incumbent must be sufficiently knowledgeable to recognize important synergies and opportunities in clinical outcomes, cost containment and patient safety/satisfaction. 
 
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 
 
Oversees operations:



Supervises daily operations of one or more pharmacies to facilitate the safe and appropriate delivery of diagnostic and/or therapeutic patient care and achievement of clinical core measurement scores.

Oversees the resolution of daily clinical, administrative and operational issues, and monitors/troubleshoots service recovery and other escalated concerns, resolving within established policy timeline.

Implements and enforces quality control/quality assurance and productivity standards and  ensures that applicable standards, systems and procedures are followed;

Monitors and audits related documentation to ensure conformance with established standards; prepares periodic productivity reports, key performance indicators and program updates for review of higher-level authority.

Collaborates with other providers in developing the most efficacious, safe and cost-effective medication treatment plans.Participates in the development and implementation of new systems/programs to enhance existing services and raise the standard of care for the patient population served.
 
 
Oversees and/or delivers pharmaceutical care to patients serviced by pharmacy facilities:
 
Consults with healthcare professionals to select the most efficacious, safe and least costly drug therapy in accordance with CHI-FH, Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission and/or Hospice Pain Management protocols as applicable.
Writes medications orders and prescriptions as necessary and in compliance with protocols.
Formulates medication therapy plans based on clinical labs, diagnosis and individual patient requirements; monitors outcomes and adjusts therapy as indicated.
 
 
Staff Supervision and Development:
 
Schedules, supervises and evaluates the work of assigned pharmacists and ancillary staff (e.g. interns, residents, externs, students, technicians and non-pharmacy staff) in accordance with established procedures;
Assists in identifying adequate staffing levels for appropriate coverage to meet budgetary and operational objectives.
Interviews, hires and trains staff and manages/evaluates performance in accordance with established guidelines; holds regular staff meetings and communicates performance standards to keep staff apprised of successful job performance; approves timecards.
 
 
Monitors Compliance:
 
Ensures that all activities are conducted in a timely and cost-effective manner and in compliance with organizational values, professional standards, internal policies/standard/procedures and/or applicable legal/regulatory requirements.
 
 
Performance/Quality Improvement:
 
Monitors, on a continuous basis, services, patient outcomes, quality control, family/patient satisfaction, staffing needs and operational effectiveness to facilitate optimal care delivery; identifies trends/opportunities and provides recommendations to Director/Manager for new quality/performance improvement initiatives; implements new processes and ensures that performance improvement activities are conducted in a timely and effective manner; ensures that staff receive the necessary on-site training and consultation to enhance their understanding of quality/performance improvement initiatives.  
 
 
Budget:
 
Participates in annual budget planning and administration relative to assigned responsibilities; monitors work schedules to control overtime and/or premium pay; monitors/approves expenditures within defined scope of responsibility; explains variances and addresses in a timely manner; informs Director/Manager of all issues with potential for budgetary impact.
 
Performs related duties as required.','!*!Education/Work Experience Requirements:
 
Graduation from an accredited school of pharmacy (including didactic courses and experiential rotations in pharmaceutical care) and four years of related work experience which would demonstrate possession of the requisite Job Knowledge/Abilities, including two years in a “lead” or supervisory capacity, preferably in an ambulatory setting.  PharmD is strongly preferred.
 
Job Knowledge/Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of pharmaceutical care, including I.V. fluids, I.V. additive programs, automated dispensing systems, nutritional monitoring and I.V. therapy services.
Knowledge of standards, practices and procedures relating to retail pharmacy operations, merchandising and inventory control.
Knowledge of the standards and practices relating to safety, hazardous materials, risk management and security procedures applicable to matters within designated scope of responsibility.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements applicable to the pharmacy profession.
Knowledge of FHS policies, standards and procedures, as well as legal/regulatory requirements applicable to work unit operations and services.
Knowledge of the standards and practices relating to business planning, budget administration and continuous process/performance improvement.
Knowledge of the practices of employee supervision, evaluation and performance management.
Ability to perform the duties of a pharmacist in accordance with professional standards, FHS policies/procedures, healthcare provider instructions and applicable regulatory requirements.
Ability to understand financial and/or operational/productivity reports and to recognize opportunities to increase efficiency, enhance productivity and reduce costs/expenses associated with matters under designated scope of authority.
Ability to communicate, interpret and apply policies, standards, protocols and procedures applicable to matters within assigned scope of authority.
Ability to demonstrate effective supervisory skills, including developing clear performance expectations, hiring, coaching, conflict management, counseling, resolving performance problems, and group facilitation.
Ability to formulate and present therapeutic alternatives to healthcare staff at all levels.
Ability to convey technical information effectively in verbal and written communication.
Ability to read, understand and communicate in English sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
Ability to use office equipment and automated systems/applications/software at an acceptable level of proficiency.
Ability to keep abreast of trends, developments and regulatory requirements impacting matters with designated scope of authority.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships as required by the duties of the position. 
     
Licensure/Certification


Licensure as a registered pharmacist by the Washington State Board of Pharmacy. 

Membership in at least one of the following professional organizations: ASHP, ASCP, WSPA, APHA, or ACCP.

Pharmacist preceptor certification.

Board Certification in Ambulatory Pharmacy is strongly preferred.
