The Faculty of Science and Engineering comprises three schools and two strategic institutes; the Marine Institute and the Sustainable Earth Institute. With cutting edge facilities and substantial research excellence, with an international reputation across marine and biological sciences, earth sciences and sustainability, coastal engineering, computing and robotics to name a few. The School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics speciliases in the disciplines of Civil and coastal engineering, Computing, Electrical and electronic engineering and robotics, Mathematical sciences, Mechanical, marine and materials engineering and Navigation and martime science. The School has an international research profile in offshore renewable energy, marine robotics, composites materials and coastal engineering, with access to excellent research facilities. The University’s £19m marine building, which opened in 2012, houses exceptional marine testing facilities within the state of the art wave tanks and a new full mission ship bridge simulator. The University also operates a High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster to support numerical modelling and CFD applications. These facilities are further to others within the School and Faculty that include the Advanced Composites Manufacturing Centre, the Advanced Materials Characterisation and Electron Microscopy Centre, and a New Engineering and Design Facility (NEDF), a £50m investment for Engineering and Design at University of Plymouth, which will host our engineering design and fabrication facilities, including the new Control and Robotics Lab - now is an exciting time for you to join our department. The Head of School role is primarily responsible for formulating and operationalising academic strategy, ensuring appropriate plans and resources are in place for their delivery. A truly exciting time to guide the School, building on its existing strengths and developing new and innovative ways of taking the School forward. All activities undertaken within this role will be compliant with the University’s policies, including Health & Safety, Equality and Diversity, Ethics, GDPR etc. Approachable and visible the Head of School role brings a collaborative approach amidst a context of rapid change within the University and HE sector as a whole. You will need to be adept at direction setting, delegation and engaging staff in their part in delivering results for the sustainable success of the School, Faculty and University. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges in further developing a thriving School, with a proven track record of management in an equivalent context. Applicants will have considerable academic and personal credibility in a relevant discipline, as well as a commitment to working collaboratively and in partnership with staff and students across the School and more widely. The successful candidate will already be a consummate professor in their field who is now seeking an opportunity to build on the School’s success to date and guide it during a time of change and opportunity. To be successful you will need to demonstrate both the motivation for and capability in management. You will bring with you relevant experience and an ability to engage staff, peers and students as you work collaboratively to deliver results. Your ability to navigate and lead others through change will be critical to the success of the School.
