The Senior Laboratory Associate, working under the supervision of the CAECM Laboratory Directors, works well in a team environment of faculty, staff, undergraduate students, and graduate students, performs routine and specialized tasks requiring the use of advanced research and teaching equipment such as light and heavy load compression and tensile testing frames/machines and data acquisition materials and systems. The Senior Laboratory Associate acts as a resource person for all laboratory users.
The Senior Laboratory Associate will maintain CAECM laboratory equipment and facilities, support laboratory instructors and researchers, act as a Safety Officer, demonstrate and supervise the safe and proper use of civil engineering laboratory equipment to students, supervise and assist in the preparation, fabrication, testing, and operation of various components for teaching and research projects, and work cooperatively with others to meet the changing requirements within the Department and Faculty.
Primary Responsibilities
*Maintain CAECM laboratory equipment and facilities to be safe, clean and operational at all times. Labs include: Construction Materials, Soil, High-Bay, and Large Scale Test Facility. *Support laboratory instructors and researchers and focus on the critical issues in the laboratories operations. *Act as a Lab Safety Officer; instruct, supervise and monitor safety procedures for the CAECM laboratories in accordance with University/College/Department policies. *Develop and maintain written lab safety and operation procedures. *Demonstrate and supervise the safe and proper use of civil engineering laboratory equipment to students. *Supervise and assist in the preparation, fabrication, testing, and operation of various components for teaching and research projects in CAECM laboratories. *Assist undergraduate and graduate students with their annual student competitions and with their research projects. *Work cooperatively with others to meet the changing requirements within the Department and Faculty, which may include additional duties and responsibilities.
Competencies and Skills
*Understanding of civil engineering terminology, laboratory processes and typical equipment used. *Willingness to learn and master new processes and equipment. *Demonstrated experience in civil engineering design and construction practices. *Experience in operating structural load test frames, controls, and data acquisition systems. *Knowledge of ASTM material standards and load testing standards. *Ability to solve complex technical problems. *Strong spoken and written communication skills. *Basic knowledge of Word and Excel to create and format documents and spreadsheets and ability to learn and adapt to new software as the need arises. *Physical ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds, and climb and work on ladders. *Knowledge and safe operation and maintenance of basic hand and power tools. *Order replacement lab equipment and parts based on maintenance needs and new lab equipment as directed by and approved by the Laboratory Directors.
Minimum Qualifications
*Bachelor’s degree from a civil engineering program or related field with one (1) year experience; -OR- Associate’s degree with three (3) years experience; -OR- five (5) years experience.
