Description
**MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Western invites applications for the Director of the Early Learning Center to administer four licensed child care classrooms and family resources. The director is responsible for managing all resources necessary for daily and sustainable operation of the center. The Learning Center is a self-funded program located on the university campus. The director must be committed to the field of early childhood care and education through professional contributions and advocacy for young children.
The director must demonstrate an understanding of developmentally appropriate early childhood practices and procedures and be able to formulate practices and policies to meet all national, state, and local standards. The director will supervise staff, both permanent staff and student staff, and provide in-service training. Planning and implementing long- and short-term goals, budget management and grant management, will be key functions of this position. Additional responsibilities include overseeing USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program contract and budget; managing the DPHHS Child Care Innovation grant; marketing and promoting of programs; guiding parent Interactions and problem solving; implementing a developmentally appropriate program serving a large rage of ages of children; and planning and coordinating early childhood care and education activities.
Responsibilities
This position exercises discretion and independent judgement with respect to:
Supervising four fulltime lead teachers, six part-time care givers and four student assistants
Planning long- and short-term business objectives
Representing the institution in handling complaints, arbitrating disputes and resolving differences
Leading the team to complete programming responsibilities
Serving as authorized purchasing agent for the Early Learning Center
Serving on-call during non-standard work hours
Ensuring a fiscally sound operation
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree
in a related field with a minimum of 24 college credits in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Special Education
Professional Experience:
Minimum of one year of experience as a director in a licensed childcare setting or at least three years’ experience in a licensed childcare setting, plus some management experience in a licensed childcare setting
Nutrition Oversite
: Knowledge of early childhood nutrition standards and acceptable food handling and preparation practices; ability to plan a nutritious menu and supervise the purchasing of food items; ability to make decisions necessary to manage the food service program; ability to establish and oversee the food service budget
Staff Supervision
: Knowledge of supervisory practices; ability to guide staff through practices and procedures as needed to meet all standards; skills to develop training materials and conduct training as needed; ability to intervene and take corrective action when necessary
Program Management
: Ability to assess and evaluate the programs conformance to national, state, and local standards; ability to write procedures that will govern the programs operations; ability to implement an ongoing monitoring system for maintaining program standards; ability to plan, direct and coordinate the operation of all aspects of the program; ability to work independently, make decisions, disseminate information; ability to work with others and to solve problems in a cooperative and constructive manner
Budget Oversite
: Ability to establish and follow a written budget, maintain records, manage numerous financial resources, oversee purchasing; ability to comply with any necessary grant reporting/parameters; knowledge of budgeting, financial planning and accounting principles and techniques, and cost control procedures
Enrollment Management
: Establish and update brochures, forms, web page, newsletters, and other informational materials; monitor enrollment to maintain budget revenue; pursue community partnerships to establish ongoing enrollment partnerships
Quality Early Learning/Care
: Knowledge of acceptable early childhood care and education practices, including positive guidance; knowledge of stages of child development; knowledge of family relations; ability to research and implement changes; ability to plan a developmentally appropriate curriculum; knowledge of developmentally acceptable practices including assessment practices; ability to choose materials and resources that support the curriculum
Organization
: Experience with Microsoft Office and ability to learn UMW business systems
Personal Attributes
: Ability to exercise diplomacy and good judgment; ability to sit in low chairs, stand, carry items, kneel, crawl, and lift, clean indoors and outdoors; able to demonstrate good moral character; sufficient language skills to communicate with children and adults; stamina to keep up with young children
Health Related
: Ability to perform CPR and first aid; immunized in compliance with state regulations for a licensed childcare setting
