Department/School: School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences
Supervisors:
Dr Katherine Finlay, Psychology
Dr Lindsey Roberts, School of Psychology and Wellbeing, University of Buckingham
Project Overview:
The CDC estimates over 2 million ppl/year in the US develop infections with resistant organisms and 23,000 people die as a direct result (Frieden, 2013). Infections with resistant organisms are associated with longer hospital stays (Fan et al, 2014), and increased mortality and healthcare costs (Paterson et al., 2015). Despite the prevalence of UTI, patient recruitment remains a major contributor to clinical trial failure, meaning that solutions to the recurrence of UTI and the risks associated with antimicrobial resistance are difficult to resolve. Global data indicate that 55% of trials were terminated due to low recruitment rates (Pharmaceutical Technology, 2018), and more than 80% of trials fail to reach enrolment targets on time (Clinical Trials Arena, 2019).
There is a critical need to assess the gap between patients’ motivations to participate in research and industry recruitment strategies. Further, there is an urgent requirement for the development and validation of clinical recruitment guidelines which will support greater inclusion of public and patient involvement in such critical clinical trials. This PhD will use behaviour change research methods to focus on enhancing clinical trials recruitment for people with recurrent Urinary Tract Infections, working with key Pharmaceutical Stakeholders to identify and pilot key strategies for enhanced trials uptake.
