EdPlus at ASU is seeking a
Research Data Scientist
to join our dynamic, interdisciplinary research and development team driving continuous improvement in online, hybrid, and emerging modes of teaching and learning in higher education and lifelong learning. Research is action-oriented; supporting and coordinating with university stakeholders to improve student learning, motivation, and persistence, and increase equity across the university. As an integral member of the EdPlus Action Lab, the researcher will conduct and analyze experimental, quasi-experimental, and statistical research that informs evidence-based instructional practices, pedagogy, engagement, and educational technology. This role will collaborate on research investigations to enhance tactical and strategic decision-making, improve instruction, ensure quality courses, promote student success, and increase equity in representation and achievement for a wide variety of diverse populations.
The ideal candidate will bring strong skills in data, analytics, modeling, and visualization in R and a variety of other languages/applications; knowledge of research methodology and applications in higher education; a passion to improve and equalize student learning and success across all demographic groups; and is seeking opportunities for growth and promotion into senior level positions. The Action Lab leads collaborative research on motivation, persistence, and learning across diverse learner populations in online and hybrid learning environments, resulting in the greater realization of human potential.

Essential Duties
Performs data cleaning, statistical analysis, data visualization, etc., (ability to read and program in R is required)
Collaborates and works with multiple stakeholders and groups across the University to conduct and oversee experimental, quasi-experimental, and post-hoc research/analytics to inform evidence-based instructional practices, pedagogy, engagement, and technology.
Collaborates on research investigations to enhance tactical and strategic decision making, improve instruction, ensure quality courses, promote student success, and increase equity in representation and achievement for a wide variety of diverse populations.
Selects, develops, and/or recommends appropriate research design methodologies, data analyses, and statistical procedures; determines appropriate methodology to be used for particular project(s).
Communicates with internal and external constituencies to obtain necessary information.
Coordinates and determines compatibility of data from various sources (e.g. internal ASU data tables, external datasets).
Prepares and presents research findings to various audiences on assessment results; write technical reports, presentations, and articles for publication.
May supervise, monitor, or coordinate the activities of student research assistants.
Seeks, evaluates, and assists in implementing new and emerging technologies that have potential value for online teaching and learning.
Conducts and assists with the development of long- and short-range goals that influence tactical and strategic decision making, improve instruction, ensure quality courses, and promote student success.
Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field AND three years of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Master's degree in a related field AND one year of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
Evidence of quantitative and data skills.
Skills in programming, data management, descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, and modeling in R; additional experience with Python, MATLAB or similar is desirable.
Data visualization creation ability in R or similar, esp. dynamic visualizations and dashboards.
Broad experience/interest in a variety of statistical techniques; ability and interest in developing skills to match needs in these areas.
Evidence of effective communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to translate statistical findings into layperson language.
Experience in higher education research and practice; learning science experience preferred.
Evidence of a PhD or MA/MS preferred, preferably in education/learning sciences, data science, or related discipline; will consider ABD.
Working Environment
EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.
Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
