The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS) at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. and the Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) at Tsinghua University, are collaborating on a research project with the aim of creating a Digital Archive of the Middle East (DAME). This is being achieved through the digitisation of portions of major, largely unstudied, and uncatalogued archives of documentation from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region held in Special Collections and the Arab World Documentation Unit (AWDU) at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***..
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. holds globally important archival collections pertaining to the MENA region. These holdings reflect the institution’s role in the development of a whole series of subfields in Area Studies and the pioneering role the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies has played in establishing the world’s first research centres in, for instance, Gulf Studies, Kurdish Studies, and Islamic Archaeology.
The MENA Special Collections at Exeter include, for example, the papers of Sir Charles Belgrave (Bahrain), Sir John Wilton and Sir William Luce (British colonial history in the Gulf), the  research materials of Jonathan Crusoe (Iraq/Kuwait), the papers of John Shebbeare and John Craven Wilkinson (modern Omani history), the academic  papers and correspondence of Nazih Ayubi (covering political Islam, public administration and economic theory in Egypt and the Middle East), the Omar Sheikhmous archive (twentieth-century Kurdish political history), the archives of the Imperial Institute (c.3000 glass plate photographs, including of the Middle East), political and economic material from - and pertaining to - the Arabian Peninsula from the 1970s to the present, including political opposition movements’ documents and gazettes, legal texts and human rights campaign material, Gulf monarchies’ official reports and publications, and a significant collection of historical maps of the MENA region.
As part of DAME, three fully-funded PhD studentships have been created, one each in Archaeology, Gulf Studies, and Kurdish Studies to use these collections. Priority will be given to proposals that engage critically with digital tools and methods, using digitisation not merely as a means of realizing research objectives but exploring how digitization can transform and extend how those objectives are understood.  Applicants for the PhD studentships would be expected to show an understanding of digital research as an essential part of their theoretical framework and methodology and not just a technical tool, and to propose research projects that draw on the specific strengths of Exeter’s collections. A high degree of interdisciplinary collaboration would also be anticipated.
There is, for example, great potential for the application of geo-spatial approaches – creating a multi-layered analysis of places or routes that bring together diverse texts (ancient history, personal memoirs, political writings, travel literature or biography) along with photographic images and their attached metadata. As well as GIS databases that link geographical data with chronological timelines and historical or political texts, or interactive maps with interpretive layering, or the visualization of archaeological site distribution and investigation, and archaeological practice, and its linkage with the creation of borders in the MENA region.
There is also ample scope for projects involving textual analysis and oral history. Digitising materials across different collections has the potential to highlight intellectual, cultural, social, political transnational connections that might otherwise be missed, through analysis and documentation of sources from diverse groups

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
