ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY (Cal Maritime):
Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) system. Serving a population of approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States - and the only one on the West Coast. Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general direction from the Director of Student Health Services, the Counselor provides direct counseling/clinical services to students that primarily includes short-term individual counseling, but also couples and group counseling; clinical triage, crisis intervention and debriefing; clinical assessment, case management, collaboration with other medical providers, and consultation and referrals to services both on and off campus. In addition, the Counselor develops and implements outreach programs on campus, consisting of workshops, presentations, student peer educator training/guidance, community mental health prevention, as well as mental health screening activities. The Counselor also provides consultation with University faculty, staff and administrators regarding student mental health concerns.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Demonstrated ability to conduct brief individual, couples and group psychotherapy.
• Experience working with issues pertinent to a diverse student population with a broad spectrum of psychological issues as well as experience and knowledge working with high-risk clients.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct clinical intake interviews, psycho-diagnostic assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment plan formulation.
• Demonstrated ability to provide crisis intervention.
• Demonstrated effectiveness providing counseling to students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse identities including based on race, gender, sexual preference, disability status, religion, socio-economic backgrounds, age, and others.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement outreach programs and presentations.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws as well as professional ethics pertaining to mental health.
• Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills and strong planning and organizational skills.
• Ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of mental health and primary care providers within an integrated Student Health Center.
• Ability to use an Electronic Health Record effectively for documenting provided mental health care.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, EDUCATION:
• Licensed mental health professional, doctoral (PhD, PsyD, EdD) or masters (LMFT, LPC, LPCC, LCSW).
• Licensed in good standing in the State of California or if licensed in another state, be granted California licensure within 180 days or per applicable California professional board regulations.
• Demonstrated compliance with continuing education requirements per licensure.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience providing mental health care in a higher education setting
• Interest and experience providing mental health care for women, LGBTQIA students, and students from underrepresented groups.
• Experience with the development of prevention and wellness programs suitable for college campuses.
• Experience with alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and treatment.
• Interest and experience in valuing social justice as being integral to mental health care.
• Ability to practice independently and in both satellite and primary CAPS locations.
SPECIAL NOTE: Provision of mental health services aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear on part of its annual training cruise may be an option.
SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications and experience of the individual.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The position will be in the Lower Residence Halls, ground floor, or occasionally in the Health Center.
