The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences wishes to appoint a Lecturer with a social science focus in one of the following broad areas: Energy transitions Environmental management and sustainability The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, interdisciplinary School with an enviable record of success. Our research and teaching activities address issues of sustainability on land and at sea, and we are seeking to appoint an excellent candidate capable of advancing our interdisciplinary activities. You will demonstrate an ability to attract research funding and produce high-quality research outputs and / or impact. Teaching will be largely into undergraduate and postgraduate Environmental Science programmes, with specific contribution to BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability, although the potential to expand into at least one other cognate programme would be an advantage. This post will require you to deliver substantial content specific to the human / social aspects of environmental science and sustainability, and candidates must demonstrate relevant knowledge and expertise, including social research methods and approaches. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise in the following areas: renewable and sustainable energy (including domestic and international energy policy, clean energy futures, energy justice / poverty); environmental business and management; community or citizen participation in environmental management; environmental law; systems thinking; social research methods and approaches. Based in theFaculty of Science and Engineering, theSchool of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciencescomprises four distinct areas – chemistry, earth sciences, environmental sciences and geography – each of which delivers exceptional teaching, support and research. All our degree programmes are professionally accredited and designed with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in mind. Staff and students work and study in the stunning natural landscape of south-west England. Our national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, characterful towns and cities, and 650 mile-long coastline provide the backdrop for our work addressing global sustainability challenges on land and at sea. An interdisciplinary team of world-class academics undertake teaching and research focused on challenges including climate change, natural hazards, social justice, pollution, energy transitions, land- and seascape conservation and the sensitive development of natural resources. The School’s Athena SWAN Bronze award demonstrates the University’s ongoing commitment to advancing gender equality and success for all. The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences comprises nearly 60 academic staff and enjoys excellent support from well-resourced laboratory facilities (including 16 technicians). Our staff members hold research income in excess of £13m from all major funding providers and teach in excess of 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
