We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic and committed PhD student to join the Energy 2050 research group, researching combustion behaviour and deployment of novel fuel(s) for off-grid energy supply.
This fully-funded 4-year PhD has industry sponsorship from Dimeta BV, a company focussed on developing renewable fuels for the LPG sector.
Available for start in October 2022
Annual Tax-free salary of £19,350 for 4 years
Includes 6 months secondment with Dimeta
In England there are around 1.1 million homes, and an estimated 100,000 non-domestic buildings that are not connected to the gas grid, of which the majority use heating oil, LPG or solid fuels. Providing low-carbon energy to off-grid properties is therefore an urgent priority for government and the LPG industry. Alongside bioLPG, which is already commercially available in the UK, the LPG sector is actively developing dimethyl ether from renewable or recycled carbon (rDME) to accelerate the transition for off-grid customers to clean-burning, low-carbon fuel.
To ensure the safe deployment and efficient utilisation of rDME as a fuel in the domestic, industrial, commercial and agricultural sectors, the safety aspects, as well as combustion characteristics and emissions of rDME and its various blend ratios with currently-used gases need to be addressed thoroughly. Whilst DME has been used safely in the chemicals sector for decades, there is still a knowledge gap in both industry and academia on the fundamental aspects of combustion behaviour, particularly for a wide range of modern appliances. This CASE PhD therefore combines a detailed study of fuel combustion behaviour with a cross-disciplinary consideration of decarbonisation impact.
The key research aims of this PhD include: Theoretical and experimental study of the combustion characteristics of DME and DME/LPG blends; research new techniques to improve appliance performance (reduced fuel consumption, improved safety, reduced emissions) with DME and DME/LPG blends; assess the potential decarbonisation impact from the roll-out of rDME across the off-grid sector in UK/Europe, considering sustainability, techno-economics, customer behaviour, and government policy.
This CASE PhD is supported by Dimeta, a joint-venture between SHV Energy and UGI, two of the largest distributors of LPG in the world, which aims specifically to develop the supply and deployment of rDME in the LPG sector. The PhD candidate will receive tailored support including an industry supervisor, an up to 6-month placement taking place within Dimeta, and a top-up stipend above the standard rate of an UKRI studentship. The knowledge gained in the PhD will enable you to contribute to the development of standards and regulations around the use of renewable fuels in industry and gain exposure to the industrial regulatory process, government policy and advocacy. You will also gain a greater understanding of innovation and business development within a commercial context.
The candidate should have a strong academic record and a desire to apply research in an industry context. They should be self-motivated, curious, and professional, with an understanding of the wider context of their research and a strong desire to have a positive and meaningful impact through their work.
Overseas candidates will require an overall of 6.5 in IELTS with 6 in each component or equivalent.
Interview date in between 2nd-13th May.
Closing date: 24th April 2022
