SUMMARY: Manages, supports, and promotes all aspects of the research activity in the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience at SOM and the Rowan Institute for Brain and Behavioral Sciences. The position requires a thorough knowledge of biomedical laboratory operations in an academic health care setting in order to promote lab safety; manage animal use protocols; facilitate grant submissions; promote public outreach and public awareness of ongoing research programs; enhance recruitment of research-intensive faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students; manage department and programmatic resources including space and common equipment; address faculty needs with respect to repairs and renovations; and serve as the department and program liaison to other Rowan departments, institutes, and offices with regard to all research activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
ROWAN INSTITUTE FOR BRAIN AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
Serve as program coordinator for the Institute for Brain and Behavioral Sciences.
Support the Director and Co-Director of the institute with respect to programmatic management and trainee-related management including Rowan reporting requirements, internal and external communications, social media announcements and website management.
Manage intramural fellowship program including submission, review process, and award notification; manage semi-annual progress reporting for fellowship awards.
Coordinate seminars, colloquia, and public outreach events.
Organize steering committee site visits.
Identify grant opportunities and facilitate grant submissions on behalf of the institute and institute investigators.
Coordinate fund raising activities.
Manage core facilities.
CELL BIOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Research Environment
Insure compliance with all lab safety requirements
Prepare IACUC and IBC protocols as needed
Maintain database of departmental IACUC and IBC protocols
Work with attending veterinarian and vivarium staff to meet department needs related to animal research
Orient and ensure the integration of new research staff members into the department and laboratory work unit.
Maintain health, CITI, and animal training records per IACUC regulations for all departmental personnel
Assist all graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians in obtaining authorizations for laboratory work.
Work closely with EHRS to maintain compliance with current policies and procedures
Manage inventory of department common equipment
Prepare for and coordinate laboratory inspections throughout the department
Assist in preparation and submission of applications for NJ and DEA licenses for controlled substances
Play an instrumental role in the development of new standard operating procedures as they pertain to research activities within the department.
Manage communication with and among all research laboratories within the department.
Grant submissions and funding
Identify and communicate opportunities for extramural funding
Assist as needed in preparation and submission of grant applications to public and private funding agencies
Maintain and update department list of research interests and technical expertise
Assist as needed in preparation and submission of progress reports for granting agencies
Communications
Serve as the departmental research liaison to Rowan academic departments and university offices
Serve as a liaison to Rowan neuroscience and cell biology communities
Coordinate departmental seminars and workshops
Participate in development of public outreach projects
Work with marketing and media to create branding materials for departmental research activities; video and print
Maintain and update department website, i.e faculty research pages
Coordinate the development of individual faculty lab websites with strategic planning and management
Assist with organization of summer high school programs (HS Biomedical Scholars Program)
Work with marketing and the graduate school to enhance research visibility and graduate student recruitment
Faculty and student recruitment
Serve on faculty search committees as needed
Provide guidance and expertise to faculty, research administration, and other staff on grant and contract administrative and regulatory/compliance issues.
Develop policies and procedures regarding the process for grant and contract applications.
Review all proposals prior to submission to federal, state, local, and private funding sources to ensure compliance with all policies and regulations.
Maintain expertise in university and federal/state private agencies' regulations and policies and stays up-to-date on new laws affecting sponsored program activities.
Develop and maintain the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Management Information Systems.
Understand and adhere to Rowan University's compliance standards as they appear in Rowan's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
Stay abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rowan University regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
Ensure that research staff and students are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's Degree (Master's Degree preferred) plus four (4) years of related experience involving research and/or sponsored programs administration, preferably in an academic environment. Knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and financial analysis. Demonstrated competence with computer/spreadsheet software in relation to the management of a large sponsored programs database. Current knowledge and expertise of federal/state agency regulations, policies, procedures, and laws applicable to sponsored program activity. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Outstanding human relations and the ability to function in a team environment are required. Demonstrated knowledge of how to accomplish superior performance in a unionized environment is necessary. Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.
