Professional Journalist in Residence
DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
The Sacramento State Journalism program, part of the Communication Studies Department, emphasizes research, writing and editing for interactive media, and provides other courses necessary to prepare students for success in media-related jobs; it also includes courses that critically examine media as an institution. Journalism majors are the core of students who write for The State Hornet news organization. This major is demographically diverse and represents a multitude of backgrounds, skills, and abilities.
POSITION DETAILS:
Sacramento State seeks a full-time Professional Journalist in Residence. The position is a full-time Lecturer with an initial 1-year appointment. Subsequent appointments are dependent on satisfactory performance. This person's primary assignment will be as the faculty adviser and business manager of The State Hornet news organization. This includes developing and maintaining a professional online student news publication, mentoring and training students, and overseeing the administration of The State Hornet . The person in the position will also teach Journalism 128, News Editing.
The State Hornet is an award-winning online-only news organization featuring video and podcasts. The Associated Collegiate Press recently recognized the Hornet with a Pacemaker Award - the nation's top award for college news organizations. It was the Hornet's second Pacemaker Award in five years. Student participation in Hornet activities and related courses has grown sharply. Hornet staff this year moved into new office space - the Hornet's second expansion in the last five years - that will house new multimedia and studio equipment.
JOB DUTIES:
Duties include developing and maintaining a professional online student publication, mentoring and training students, overseeing the financial operation of the publication, and teaching the News Editing (Journalism 128) course.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor's degree in Journalism or a related field.
- At least five years of experience in professional journalism.
- Demonstrated interest and ability to work with a diverse student population.
- Experience working with online platforms and/or multimedia.
- Experience as the lead reporter or editor on one or more significant journalism projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A master's or doctorate degree in journalism or a related field
- News management experience.
- Knowledge of operating, marketing plans and training programs for news staff.
