Position Summary:
The Associate Vice President for Marketing advances the mission, vision, and goals of Middlebury and all its entities-the College, Institute of International Studies in Monterey, Language Schools, Schools Abroad, Bread Loaf School of English and Writer's Conferences, and School of the Environment-by concepting, designing, implementing, and monitoring expert marketing strategies that contribute to the ongoing health and wellbeing of the institution and its people.
The Associate Vice President has a keen understanding of institutional character and the traits that can differentiate an organization in a competitive marketplace. With an imperative to strengthen student recruitment and enrollment across Middlebury, deepen ties to alums and friends, help make a variety of affiliated programs more prosperous, and elevate brand, the Associate Vice President has sophisticated understanding of the communications side of the mar/com equation and helps bring about the optimal connection between marketing strategy and the words, images, and platforms that together achieve results.
The Associate Vice President for Marketing has strategic vision; is an imaginative thinker; is data driven with keen analytical and problem-solving skills; cultivates relationships across Middlebury; is a superb and sensitive supervisor to a talented team; plans long-term while also operating in the moment in a high-volume, fast-paced, environment; is customer oriented while attentive to the needs of the internal community; and has genuine appreciation for the values of higher education, diverse and inclusive communities, and global perspectives. The position reports to the Vice President for Communications and Marketing and collaborates with colleagues across the department and throughout the institution
Essential Functions:
Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
Establish marketing priorities with institutional leadership, vice president for communications and marketing, the marketing team, and select peers.
Design and implement strategies and integrated, multi-touch campaigns across appropriate ad and marketing channels to drive business goals in enrollment, alum engagement, various programs, and brand recognition.
Set current and long-term goals for internal teams.
Collaborate closely with edit, art, multimedia, and social media teams to ensure collateral is created in partnership-smart, compelling, on brand, and effective.
Develop, oversee, and manage advertising of programs across platforms.
Oversee ongoing, appropriate market research activity to inform strategy by identifying challenges and opportunities for growth.
Monitor progress of marketing campaigns and draft performance reports.
Leverage and interpret research, market analysis, and external insights to learn from the findings to increase the effectiveness of future campaigns.
Design and oversee the marketing budget in consultation with the vice president for communications and marketing, marketing team members, and the internal budget team.
Bring departmental leadership to a talented team, provide guidance and feedback to marketing professionals across the institution, and advise Middleburys senior administrators on issues involving marketing.
Direct the work of external vendors as appropriate to execute marketing and advertising activities.
Serve as an active member of the Middlebury Institute Leadership Group and advise leadership on a range of communication strategies.
General Responsibilities:

Qualifications
Education:
A bachelors degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or relevant field desired, with advanced degree or certification in appropriate area of specialization a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Record of creating multi-channel (paid and organic) marketing campaigns with emphasis on web/digital; leading the processes to develop strategy and identify audiences/segments; partnering on messaging and collateral.
Command of leading-edge technology and resources in online marketing and best practices including SEO, CRM, web analytics, Google Adwords, and other digital marketing tools and techniques.
Accomplished in both strategic and tactical thinking, data-driven decision making, short and long-term planning, and problem solving.
High EQ with ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders, navigate a complex institution, and lead and inspire a talented team.
Ability to work in a matrixed organization and collaborate with teams and individuals dispersed geographically and reporting to different staff.
A client-service approach with a commitment to superb performance.
Adept at working in a fast-paced, high-demand environment; exercising diplomacy; managing expectations; setting realistic deadlines; re-setting priorities as necessary.
Strong external focus (while always attentive to internal communities) to keep current on peer/competitor strategies and tactics and to evaluate our positioning in a competitive marketplace.

Must be flexible and available outside business hours. May be called to respond to urgent matters at any time, including scheduled days off.
Experience:
At least ten years of relevant professional experience including four years senior leadership and executive level performance in a fluid, high-demand, high-volume environment. Experience working in higher education and other mission-driven organizations desirable.
