The Department Chair will: Support the School’s mission and philosophy as well as strategic initiatives Coordinate the 5-8 curriculum Work with the Middle School Principal and the Dean of Faculty/Employees in assessing the scope and sequence of the curriculum; oversee the Department’s Atlas Rubicon database Schedule and lead regular department meetings Assist in the hiring and mentoring of new teachers and fellows in the Middle School Visit classes of department members on a periodic basis Participate in the Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation (CFE) process with the Division Principals to provide consistent feedback, guidance, and support to Department members Oversee course selection and student placement with the Middle School Principal Serve on the Middle School Academic Affairs Committee and the Curriculum Council Model effective classroom teaching for department members Teach four sections of Middle School Language Arts classes depending on other duties as assigned Demonstrate an approach that is nurturing and supportive of students and faculty Communicate professionally and effectively with administrators, colleagues, and parents Lead departmental professional development, particularly to stay current and explore new ideas in the discipline; organize in-house and communicate external professional development experiences Assist in coordinating the external peer review process for the department Advocate for school policies and practices that ensure pedagogical success for the department Collaborate with the Upper School Department Chair to ensure the continuity of the curriculum across both divisions Serve as an Academic Advisor in the Middle School Participate in meetings, field trips, special activities, and rotational duties Regularly write reports that evaluate student performance and demonstrate knowledge of students’ experiences Desired qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in English required; Master’s degree or higher preferred Ability to teach English/Language Arts classes appropriate for students in grades 5-8 3-5 years of experience teaching at the Middle School level, plus a strong grasp of the unique needs of learners in the Middle School A well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; a positive attitude, energy, and an inspiring and entrepreneurial leadership style Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills Facility with laptop technology and remote/hyflex teaching and learning Ability to support the extra-curricular life of the school Excitement for working with Middle School students, employees, and families RCDS seeks faculty and staff who support our mission to foster a lifelong passion for learning, understanding, and service in an ever-changing world, and who share our commitment to creating and sustaining a vibrant, thriving, and inclusive multicultural learning community.
