About the Position:
The Office of Disability Support Services strives to increase access and retention for students with permanent and temporary disabilities by ensuring equitable treatment in all aspects of campus life. The program acts as a catalyst and agent for compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations mandating equal opportunity and access for person with disabilities. Our office provides co-curricular and academically related services which empower students with disabilities to achieve academic and personal self-determination. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Assistive Technology Coordinator (Student Services Professional II-Range A). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
The Assistive Technology Coordinator is responsible for a variety of complex tasks related to providing accessible technology to students with disabilities. The position works with confidential and sensitive student information by providing academic technology support to students utilizing accessible media, have print-related disabilities, and students who are blind or visually impaired. This position acts as the primary contact within Disability Support Services (DSS) for blind and visually impaired students. Coordinates accessible technology education, training and support for faculty, students, and staff through one-on-one trainings, workshops and presentations. Researches and trains on new assistive technologies. Assists in the production of accessible format exam conversion services for students with disabilities. Provides oversight for student assistants as needed. Gathers data to explore best practices for accessible media processes and use of assistive technology/productivity software. Provides software support for notetaking software and other assistive technology software utilized by students. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience providing one-on-one academic counseling and support for students requiring educational materials in accessible formats. Experience in working with students with disabilities. Knowledge and use of specialized equipment, software, and techniques for document digitization and the and the production of braille text. In-progress or completion of Braille transcriber certification. Experience in training and supervision of students, assignment of work projects and evaluation of work performance. Knowledge and experience with assistive technology, such as CCTV, Juliet Brailler and software such as ZoomText, Kurzweil, DNS, Glean, voice recorders, smart pens, One-Note.
