Overview
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has an open position for a research staff scientist at the DIII-D national fusion facility, located in San Diego, CA. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of scientists with diverse expertise working to advance understanding and develop new approaches for the problem of core-edge integration in tokamak reactors, in the general area of H-mode pedestal transport. State of the art modeling tools will be used to understand and predict energy, particle and impurity transport in high performance scenarios leveraging core-edge integration strategies such as radiative divertor or applied 3D fields for ELM suppression.
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Modeling key datasets from recent and upcoming DIII-D experiment by simulating pedestal and edge plasma, including particle and impurity transport, validating those simulations with experiment (50%)
Proposing and carrying out experiments on DIII-D to test model predictions, while also developing an intimate understanding of the plasma diagnostics that will be the focus of modeling and model validation (50%)
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
The applicant should have a Ph.D in plasma physics and at least two years of post-doctoral experience in fusion plasma research.
It is preferred that the applicant has broad experience in applying models and performing data analysis for the plasma pedestal and boundary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent computer skills and demonstrated experience in running advanced and comprehensive simulation codes.
Experience collaborating with experimentalists in large research teams on fusion facilities is desired.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in plasma simulation with experimental application, in particular edge transport simulation codes.
Experience with tokamak pedestal stability and transport is highly desired.
Familiarity with plasma stability and transport in non-axisymmetric configurations, as well as plasma spectroscopy, is a plus.
Working Conditions:
Periodic participation in PPPL-led international collaborations is expected.
