Overview
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
Responsibilities
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) invites applications for a Head of Tokamak Experimental Science (TES).
The Head of TES will work closely with PPPL Research and Engineering departments and divisions and the ITER Diagnostics and Infrastructure Project teams at PPPL. An initial list of TES responsibilities includes (not necessarily in priority order):
Organizing and directing tokamak collaborative research at PPPL including the development of coordinated research plans between the DIII-D Research program, long-pulse tokamak international collaborations, and ITER research and operations.
Organizing and directing spherical torus (ST) research at PPPL including the development of coordinated research plans between the NSTX-U Research program, the LTX-beta research program, and ST collaborations.
Organizing and aligning ST and tokamak collaborative research plans to identify cross-cutting and synergistic research areas which would benefit from increased coordination of modelling activities, research milestones, new diagnostics, and staff expertise.
Develop and utilize cross-tokamak/ST goals and requirements to inform PPPL user requests and input to the TRANSP project
Represent PPPL experimental tokamak and ST research in domestic and international venues such as the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) coordinating committee.
Engage the PPPL Theory and Computational Sciences Departments in addressing key scientific questions relevant to tokamak experimental science.
Work closely with the ITER Research and Operations Coordinator (IROC) to utilize PPPL tokamak experimental research to address key remaining experimental issues for ITER.
Ensure adequate resources and staff are available to achieve TES goals
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in plasma physics, fusion science, nuclear engineering, or closely related discipline.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of tokamak/ST research, operations, engineering, diagnostics, and simulations
Experience in scientific leadership, team development, proposal development, successful funding
Ability to work effectively and efficiently across departments and organizations to achieve goals
Ability to effectively negotiate and communicate with domestic and international stakeholders
Ability to define, write, and communicate a compelling vision aligned with the missions and goals of PPPL and DOE
Physical Requirements:
Periodic domestic and international travel may be required to execute the duties of this position.
