Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
STEM Starter Academy is a program that aims to improve successful outcomes (retention, completion, transfer and placement) for students pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and associated degrees and certificates. Reporting to the Director of Advising and Transfer, the STEM Starter Academy Success Coach will provide academic and career coaching, college transition services, and referral services to academic and non-academic support areas. The STEM Starter Academy Success Coach will manage a caseload of 25-30 students utilizing a case management approach to support academic success and retention. Though embedded in the Science department, the STEM Starter Academy Success Coach will work in close collaboration with the Academic Advising Center in order to maintain and share relevant programmatic and policy information and participate in professional development.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Meet regularly with a caseload of 25-30 STEM students throughout the academic year to provide both academic and non-academic support and referrals, in-person and utilizing available campus technology.
Assess student needs, determine appropriate support and provide follow-up communication and support.
Introducing students to critical deadlines, policies, and tools.
Monitor and track student progress and collect notes on student meetings.
Help develop a calendar of STEM Scholar events and assist in facilitating student events and meetings.
Collaborate with Science faculty to maintain and share advising related information and facilitate smooth transitions to faculty advisors.
Provide referrals when necessary for services such as tutoring, disability services, career planning, financial aid, etc.
Help create informational emails, social media posts, and website content for the Science Department and SSA.
Maintain office hours for student meetings.
Participate in science department and SSA meetings.
Attend and contribute to regular Academic Advising Center meetings and professional development activities.
Assist the STEM Special Programs coordinator with program planning, student group meetings, outreach and recruiting, and collaborative projects with faculty, staff and outside partners.
Communicate regularly with grant partners and attend scheduled grant partner meetings.
Contribute to social media accounts as needed.
Assist the STEM Coordinator with data collection and analysis.
Assist with grant, institutional and other reporting.
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field; with three (3) years' experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. * Please note, candidates without a Master's degree are welcome to submit in writing precisely how their background and experience have prepared them with the equivalent combination of education, training and experience required for the responsibilities of this position.
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Zoom, etc.
Demonstrated passion for helping students attain their educational and career goals.
Demonstrated experience and skills with one-on-one communication (i.e. teaching, coaching, mentoring, managing, etc.).
Demonstrated strong writing and organizing skills.
Demonstrated familiarity and interest in STEM fields.
Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects with multiple departments in a team environment.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and formal training in social work, counseling or related work.
Experience with academic advising, counseling or teaching career skills.
Training and presentation skills.
Website and database management skills.
Experience helping students with writing skills such as application essays, cover letters and resumes.
Experience working in college setting or with college population, especially community college.
Experience working with racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse populations.

POSITION
: STEM Starter Academy Success Coach [Academic Counselor]- Part-time (22.5 hrs/week), benefited, 12-month, MCCC/MTA unit position.
Funding for the position is guaranteed until Sept. 20, 2022 with extension into the future pending confirmation of grant funding.
RATE OF PAY
: Grade 5. Salary range for this pay grade is $34,992 to $50,962. Actual salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with the MCCC collective bargaining agreement provisions and candidates are therefore advised that it is unlikely the offered salary will be at or near the top of the range.
START DATE
: As soon as possible
Work schedule is flexible however applicants should expect to be on campus a minimum of 4 days per week.
