Position Information
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking a part-time Preschool Program Assistant
to provide program assistance in curriculum development, program design and organization, and implementation which includes the year-round Gunston Preschooler's afternoon Program. The program serves a diverse audience of up to twenty preschool children daily from three to five years of age, including children who may have disabilities.
Duties include
Assisting the Recreation Supervisor (Play School) with development and coordination of daily, weekly, and monthly age-appropriate program activities, including managing the preparation of activities; Supervising classroom(s) in the Recreation Supervisor's (Play School) absence and keeping them abreast of any special needs or problems of individual students; Supervising and participating in activities with children, including managing and addressing behaviors in a safe, supportive, and encouraging manner; Administering medication to children and serving as the initial point of contact in an emergency; Communicating with parents to keep them updated on child's progress and opportunities for improvement; Contributing to Early Childhood Assistant's performance appraisals, attending all staff meetings, and recommending training programs and seminars; Processing incident reports, preparing documentation and metrics for program, and ensuring all supplies are tracked, organized, and maintained; Ensuring compliance with governmental regulations, licensing requirements, and DPR policies; and Performing other duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor (Play School) in support of program objectives.
The successful candidate will possess:
Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with parents and children; Problem solving and supervisory skills for staff, parents, and volunteers; Effective and efficient program management experience; and Experience monitoring compliance with policies and procedures.
Selection Criteria
Minimum:
Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field; and One (1) year of experience (equivalent of 4 seasons) administering or providing support in recreational programs.
Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Desirable
: Preference may be given to candidates with e xperience in one or more of the following:
Working as a teacher/teaching assistant in a preschool or day care environment or in a job related to the care of preschool children; Assessing the needs of preschool age children and training staff on pre-school issues; Developing relationships with parent groups or community organizations and working with a culturally diverse population; Knowledge of Arlington County and Virginia Department of Social Services State licensing regulations; and/or Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.
Special Requirements
This selected employee will be required to:
Complete 16 hours of training each year related to Early Childhood Education; Obtain CPR and First Aid Certifications within one (1) month of employment; Complete MAT- Medication Administration Training (provided by employer) and Daily Health Training within 90 days of employment; Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening; and Complete additional background checks to meet licensure requirements.
If the applicant possesses a driver's license and drives to meetings and trainings, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or provide a copy of the applicant's official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
